History of Women’s Studies and its relationship to feminist critique Transnational/global feminism from the Global South (developing nations such as Africa, Asia and Latin America). Broad critique of the assumption that is a universal feminism (a Western feminism) that should be taught to women elsewhere. It also attuned with the influence of racism, nationalism and global capitalism on inequalities and structural violence. Project of building “a noncolonizing feminist solidarity across borders” (Mohanty). A Brief history of the US Women’s Movement First Wave in the late nineteenth century to 1920-struggle for women vote (suffragettes). The term feminist emerges in this period. Mid-1960 second wave : 1963 Publication of The Feminist Mystique by Betty Friedan. Era of deep cultural change. Civil Rights movement, anti-war movement. A split in the movement between those who search for equality and those who searched for liberation (Germain Greer’s The Female Eunuch , Gloria Steinem and others founded the magazine Ms., tennis player Billie Jean King (won 39 Grand Slam titles) who was an advocate for gender equality and social justice Consciousness raising groups Revival of the Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution. “the personal is political” Critique comes from Black women and Chicanas, lesbians and poor women from what they saw as a white middle class feminism “blind to the ways that gender” was lived by marginalized women.Black Statement Shulamith Firestone p ublished a seminal text The Dialectic of Sex (1970) recovering the radicalism of first wave feminists Third wave feminism (people born between 1963-1974; Generation X) Generational split from their predecessors (and mothers, ie Rebecca Walker). They want to transcend the focus gender and broaden ideas of what an independent woman can be. Opposes identity policing that restrict a young woman’s desire in fashion and life style. i.e. The Crunk Feminist Collective (rooted in southern Black hip hop culture), Yezebel, a site for Celebrity. Sex. Fashion for Women. Use of social media. Others recognize continuity with second wave and bridge figures like Gloria Anzaldúa, Cherrie Moraga, Angela Davis, Chela Sandoval whose work argued for the intersection of race, class, sexuality and gender. These two perspective in third wave feminism question essentialism which means that the category of woman is unstable and fluid and does not have universally- agreed meanings.
