Summary of article A snake was recently discovered in Panama, and it was named after DiCaprio and is known for eating snails. It is one of five species in a recent discovery, and it is predicted by scientists that there are hundreds of species we do not know about. The snake is not aggressive and coils into a ball and releases an odor if it detects threats. The other four species are similar to it, in the sense that they hunt snails, but are distinct in other ways such as size, pattern, and color. However, gold and copper mining may threaten this newfound species’ ability to survive. Popular mining sites include the areas that this species is home to. All five of the newly discovered species are “arboreal” which means they can’t survive if their habitats are deforested. A large portion of the mining that is harming the habitats is illegal, calling conservationists to action. Opinion of article It is really upsetting to know how many rare species are currently being threatened by mining. According to the president and research director of a wildlife preservation foundation, the discovery of the five snail-eating species was “the tip of the iceberg” in terms of undiscovered or recently discovered species in South and Central America. A thought that occurred to me was how many species have existed, but before humans could even discover

them, their homes were depleted? It’s really eerie to think about. I hope that law enforcement can make it so that the DiCaprio species is preserved. I have never heard of a snail-eating snake. I am curious if snail-eating snakes would be a good way to help farmers and gardeners, who often struggle to maintain their crops while snails chew away at vegetation. If we can control snails, we can create more produce and help support local farmers and decrease world hunger. We would need to find a way to control the snake population and make sure that the snakes do not eat vegetation though. So What? What now? Since the majority of mining that disrupts the habitat of the five newly discovered snail-eating species is illegal, I believe that the most necessary step is better law enforcement. Perhaps setting up rangers or video cameras to protect certain areas or making those who illegally mine pay a fine. Another action is to make sure that all legal mining is regulated and in areas where as little harm as possible can be done, and making sure that no mining gets in the way of any animal’s home.
