VIRTUAL ARCHAEOLOGY Ilham Shashaah World History to the end of the 15 th Century November 8, 2023
1 Question 1 Archaeology is a diverse and multidisciplinary field that faces various challenges and rewards depending on the specific area of study. One of the most common challenges that archaeologists encounter is the difficulty of finding and recovering material evidence of past human activities. Archaeologists have to conduct extensive research, fieldwork, and analysis to locate and excavate sites that may contain valuable information about ancient cultures, societies, and environments 1 . However, this process is often hindered by factors such as limited resources, environmental conditions, legal restrictions, ethical issues, and political conflicts. Archaeologists may also face opposition and mistrust from local communities, indigenous groups, religious authorities, or other stakeholders who may have different views or interests regarding the preservation and interpretation of the archaeological heritage. Moreover, archaeologists have to deal with the problem of storing, managing, and disseminating the large amount of data and artefacts that they collect, which requires adequate facilities, standards, and platforms 1 . Despite these challenges, archaeology also offers many rewards and benefits for both the researchers and the wider society. One of the greatest rewards for archaeologists is the satisfaction of discovering and interpreting new aspects of human history that were previously unknown or misunderstood 2 . Archaeologists can contribute to the advancement of knowledge and understanding of various topics such as human origins, cultural diversity, social change, environmental adaptation, technological innovation, and artistic expression. Archaeologists can also use their findings to inform and engage the public, raise awareness and appreciation of the cultural heritage, and promote social justice and reconciliation for marginalized or oppressed 1. 2 groups. Furthermore, archaeology can provide practical applications and solutions for contemporary issues such as urban planning, resource management, climate change, and conflict resolution 2 . Question 2 and Question 3 Archaeology is an appealing career option for anyone who has a passion for adventure, exploration, and outdoor activities. It allows people to enjoy their work while also contributing to a greater purpose of uncovering and understanding human history. As a student that has selected to pursue a career in finance, I find some aspects of archaeology interesting, such as: The use of mathematical and statistical methods to analyze and interpret archaeological data, such as radiocarbon dating, spatial analysis, and network analysis. The study of economic and financial systems in ancient and historical societies, such as trade, taxation, currency, and consumption. The application of archaeological knowledge and skills to modern issues, such as heritage management, cultural tourism, and sustainable development. However, despite the fascinating field of archaeology, I cannot see myself in that career for the following reasons: I have a strong aversion to human remains, which are often encountered in archaeological sites. I would not feel comfortable or respectful handling or studying the bones of deceased individuals. 1. Richards, J. (2011, February 17). History - ancient history in depth: Excavating human remains . 3 I have a different academic and professional background and interest, which are more aligned with finance than archaeology. I would prefer to pursue a career that utilizes and enhances my financial knowledge and skills. I have a different lifestyle and preference, which are more suited for a stable and predictable work environment than a dynamic and uncertain one. I would rather have a regular and secure income and schedule than a variable and risky one. Question 4 There are other careers or jobs that interest me in the field of history specifically as a finance pursuing student, Financial historian : A financial historian is an individual who studies and writes about the history of money, finance, and economics, using various sources and methods to analyze and interpret how financial institutions, markets, systems, and policies have evolved and influenced human societies over time 3 . They can work in different settings, such as academic institutions, think tanks, consulting firms, or media outlets. A financial historian can specialize in a specific region, period, topic, or approach of financial history, such as European financial history, colonial financial history, monetary history, or financial crises history. It is also possible for them to collaborate with other disciplines, such as political science, or sociology, to produce interdisciplinary and comparative research. A financial historian can contribute to the advancement and 1. Richards, J. (2011, February 17). History - ancient history in depth: Excavating human remains . BBC. 2. Worrell, S.
