Writing Assignments in Physiology Research
Word Document for Bones & Osteoporosis Journal Article Lange
The goals of these writing assignments are:
∙
To help you become accustomed to the writing style used in research that is relevant to human physiology & anatomy.
∙
To help you strengthen your own writing skills in a way that is relevant for science writing and relevant for your future career.
∙
To help you to learn the art of summarizing research findings.
∙
To help you identify and form connections between research physiology and its valuable and importance in other clinical and non-clinical careers that use this research information. It is anticipated that you will use this WORD (.docx) document to compose your writings and then submit them to our Canvas site for evaluation. In a carefully written paragraph, why would you say the researchers of this article felt their research was an important study to conduct? (This would likely be discerned through reading the Introduction.)
The researchers of this article felt that their study was important to conduct and gather data from because osteoporosis has been increasingly affecting millions of men and women in multiple countries across the globe. The major cause of fractures has been tracked back to osteoporosis due to the growing amount of people becoming bedridden with an increase for disability. There has not been a new drug to treat osteoporosis in almost two decades, so a new medication was desperately needed to slow this increase. Even though the Romosozumab is only approved for postmenopausal women, it will still make a huge impact and help women all over the world regain control of their lives.
In a carefully written paragraph, summarize ideas about what osteoporosis is as a disease/disorder, and the basic background of how this condition can be treated. Please be sure to discuss the education factors that women at risk for this condition need to know about environmental factors that also play a role in this condition. Osteoporosis is when a person’s bones become weak and brittle causing them to fracture easier. This is caused by them never having enough calcium in their body which over time leads to diminished bone density. Also, when they do need new bone
creation to occur after old bone was removed, their body cannot keep up with the replacement. Osteoporosis can be treated by dietary, exercise and lifestyle changes as well as supplements and medications but it can never be cured. Romosozumab is not recommend for pregnant women as it has been seen to cause bone malformation.
Also, the FDA suggests women to take supplements to prevent reverse effects and stopping smoking and the use of alcohol while taking Romosozumab. Please describe in a paragraph in your own words the general findings in the “clinical trials” section of this article,
The first trial was a placebo-controlled study with results that showed a 73% drop in new vertebral fracture risk through the 12-month long study of the group with Romosozumab. Bone mineral density increased in the lumbar spine, hip and femoral neck. The second trial was an alendronate-controlled study with results that showed a
19% lower risk of nonvertebral fracture when alendronate was administered after 12 months of Romosozumab than when alendronate was used alone. Overall, the romosozumab-alendronate group had a lower fracture rate versus the alendronate-
alendronate group. Also, the romosozumab-alendronate group had a lower clinical fracture rate than that alendronate-alendronate group.
What are some of the risk factors associated with treatment of osteoporosis with romosozumab? Risk factors associated with the use of Romosozumab for the treatment of osteoporosis include joint and neck paint, headaches, muscle spasms, weakness and
lack of energy, swelling in the legs, and insomnia. There are also various hypersensitivity reactions that can occur and a possibility of hypocalcemia. In addition, there is an increased risk of heart attacks, cardiovascular death and strokes that were reported from the trial controlled by alendronate. In a carefully written paragraph, please describe how the information discovered in this research may provide valuable information for other clinical and non-clinical careers. Specifically think about how this information may be useful for you in YOUR future career. The information discovered in this study could be valuable to medical field careers that administer drugs to patients because they could relate it to a disease they are working with and trying to help patients get treatment for. Also, the information found could be used in a similar study for a different condition that needs a new medication because they could reference the types of trials done and if they were successful or not. This research could be useful in my future career has a high school science teacher if we were studying the amount of a substance and how often a dosage was given to make a change in the outcome of something else. Sort of relating to the usage of Romosozumab and the different dosage amounts based on where the injection was going and how often the woman received it.
