Worksheet 1.4 Forces – Similari5es & Differences 1. For the homework that you just turned in, you played with two different simulations (Gravity Force Lab & Electric Field Hockey). In your groups open both applets and explore them together: a. https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/gravity-force-lab/latest/gravity-force- lab_en.html b. https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/legacy/electric-hockey 2. Answer the following regarding the two simulations: a. What parameters were you asked to modify? b. What type of force do you think each simulation was representing and why? The force for the first simulation was gravitational force because two masses were being attracted towards each other. Distance also had an effect on the amount of force produced. The force for the second simulation was the electromagnetic force because opposite and alike charges were being used to make a positively charged puck move into the goal. The parameters for the gravitational simulation that were adjustable was the mass of each object, and the distance from each object. The parameters for the electromagnetic simulation was being able to adjust how many + or - charged particles affected the positively charged puck and where you were able to place them.
3. From your reading assignment and homework with the simulations/applets, discuss what aspects are the same/different for each of the two types of forces shown below. Same for both gravitational and electrostatic Different for gravitational and electrostatic 4. Predict the relationship between the force of attraction, mass of two objects, and distance between the objects for gravitational forces? 5. Predict the relationship for force of attraction, charge of two objects, and distance between the objects for electrostatic forces? The forces are obviously different The variables used to manipulate each experiment are different (charges vs mass) The puck simulation is forcing a projectile with alike or opposite charges where the gravitational simulation is has two objects attracted to each other by mass They both were attracted to each other in some cases. The amount of force normally decreased when they got further away from each other. Each sim had multiple variables to alter that affected the force. For electrostatic forces, if the charge of two objects are the same then they will repel each other, and the closer they get more force is produced. On the other hand if the two objects have opposite charges then they will be attracted to each other, and the greater the charge of each object or particle means more force is produced. The force of attraction increases when the distance decreases and the masses of either object increases. Then the force attraction decreases when the distance of the masses increases and the mass of either object decreases.
