Questions 1. Which joint angles showed the greatest difference between ascent and descent? Select the appropriate answer and explain the reason in one sentence. Ankle angle This angle was the greatest difference because the foot movement is different up and down stairs. Knee angle - Hip angle - 2. Why do you believe that this difference occurs? Explain in one sentence. I believe this difference occurs, because there is less overall movement occurring at the knee rather than the ankle. 3. From joint angle plots, estimate where the velocity of each joint will be positive, where it will be negative and where the velocity will be zero. Note that velocity is the rate of change of position and can be measured as the slope of the position graph. a. Copy your ankle and knee angle figures from above and remove the descent data. 4. Figure 1. -50.0 -40.0 -30.0 -20.0 -10.0 0.0 10.0 20.0 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 Ankle angle (ascent)
a. Draw vertical lines where the velocity curve would be 0. Indicate whether the velocity is positive or negative for this period of time by writing a positive or negative sign in between the lines. I was unsure how I could edit this, however, the velocity would be 0 when there are inflection points (increasing data would be positive velocity and decreasing data would be negative). 5. Were your velocity predictions in the previous question, correct? a. Demonstrate this by copying the angular velocity and drawing vertical lines where the velocity is zero and positive or negative signs between the lines where there are positive and negative velocities. Velocity is 0 at the origin, positive above x axis, negative below ( couldn’t add lines) -20.0 0.0 20.0 40.0 60.0 80.0 100.0 120.0 0 2 4 6 Knee angle (ascent) Knee angle (ascent)
6. 7. Compared to your results, what would you expect the knee angle for a subject with osteoarthritis to look like over the course of the gait cycle? Explain in one sentence. No, it would be much less magnitude, because they couldn t move knee as much. 8. What about the ankle? Explain in one sentence. -800.0 -600.0 -400.0 -200.0 0.0 200.0 400.0 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 Ankle ang. Similarly, the ankle would be less magnitude, because of joint pain. 9. Briefly (2-3 sentences) explain why it is important to study gait tasks such as stair climbing. This is important to understand patterns in someone s walking. It also can be indicative of problems in the ankle, knee, or hip.
