Dr. D Stefan Dancila Fall 2023 MAE 3181 Materials and Structures Lab Fall 2023 Dr. D. Stefan Dancila Quiz #2 Solution time: Return a pdf response via e-mail to the TA before 17:00:00 CDT on Friday September 22, 2023. Student Name: ________Kamron Wilredge_______________________________ 1. (10p) Please sketch the stress-strain curve for typical mild steel and identify all the important characteristics/points .
Dr. D Stefan Dancila Fall 2023 2. (10p) Please describe the structure and operation of the electromechanical testing machine to be used for today’s experiment. An electric motor powers gears that turn 2 bolt screws that are separated by vertical columns. The vertical columns are connected by a cross-head. The crosshead moves up or down depending on which way the bolt screws are turning. Mounted on the crosshead is a load cell that records the force applied. Below the load cell is a grip that is intended to clamp the specimen. The testing machine has a digital controller on the base that is computer- controlled. 3. (10p) How is strain going to be measured in the tensile test experiment ? Strain will be measured using an extensometer that connects to the digital controller. The device has two arms that have knife edges. The knife edges will connect to the specimen and measure changes in length and strain will be measured from the change in length. 4. (10p) How is stress going to be measured in the tensile test experiment ? Stress will be measured by using my calculation of the specimen ’s cross- section area, and the load cell s measurement of applied force. The software will then divide the force by the area to calculate stress.
