Week 3 Assignment 2 (W3 A2)
Calculating Safety Performance
(50 points)
Instructions:
Using the OSHA 300A summary for provided and the appendices, or websites as a guide calculate;
(1) the total recordable incident rate, (2) lost workday rate (DAFW), (3) DJTR rates. You must show your work on the provided Calculating Safety Performance Assignment Worksheet. Type in the calculation. The formulas for calculating the rates can be found in the appendices, or websites, and course lectures.
Provide a short summary of the overall safety performance of this organization when compared to the Bureau of Labor executive summary for injuries and illnesses. That is, after calculating the rates how does EKU injury and illness rates compare to the national average and for universities and colleges? Employer-Reported Workplace Injury and Illnesses, 2019
11/04/2020 News Release: Employer-Reported Workplace Injuries and Illnesses--2019
Private industry employers reported 2.8 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses in 2019, unchanged from 2018, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. These estimates are from the Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses (SOII). In 2019, the incidence rate of total recordable cases (TRC) in private industry was 2.8 cases per 100 full-
time equivalent (FTE) workers, which was the rate reported in 2018 and 2017. (See chart 1.) The incidence rate of days away from work (DAFW) cases was 0.9 cases per 100 FTE workers and the incidence rate of days of job transfer and restriction only (DJTR) cases was 0.7 cases per 100 FTE workers, which were the rates reported in 2018. (See chart 2.) There were 888,220 nonfatal injuries and illnesses that caused a private industry worker to miss at least one day of work in 2019, essentially unchanged from 2018. Show work here:
Calculation result (10 points each)
10 +28+16+30 x 200,000/375,000
TCR: 44.8
28 +16 x 200,000/375,000
DAFW: 23.5
200 + 150/ 10 + 28 + 16 + 30
DJTR: 4.2
Summary as compared to national rates: (20 points) ***Note this is an essay not a 1, 2 or 3 sentence
response. It is an essay. More is better than less. Demonstrate your command of the material using critical thinking skillset.
After reading the Employer Reported Workplace Injury and Illnesses Report and the information given, I was able to. Calculate the TCR, DAFW, and DJTR incidence rates in 2019. Throughout my calculations I looked back on the information given on how exactly to calculate in the readings. The calculation worksheet demonstrated how exactly to calculate these incident rates accurately. In the work field of Occupational Safety and Health, safety and health workers will need to know how to be accurate on calculations in order to make sure reports are correct, as
well as to look back on to see improvement rates on certain work related injuries. These calculations equaled out to being 44.8 for TCR, 23.5 for DAFW, and 4.2 for DJTR. By multiplication, addition as well as division these rates were able to be accurate for the reports given. The organsational safety performance copared to the Bureau od Labor Statistics of injuries and illnesses are simuler. The OSHA total recordable incident rate calculation was found by the number of incidents Multiplied by 200,000 and then divided by the total number of hours works a year which was. 10 + 28 + 16. Plus 30 x 200,000 / 375,000. The lost days away from work is calculated by how many days were lost x 200,000 then divided by 375,000. Days away, restriction or transfer is calculated by the number of OSHA recordable injuries and illnesses that resulted in days away.
Bonus:
(5 points) From the information provided what issues do you think need to be fixed at Eastern Kentucky University to prevent these types of injuries from occurring again in the future? Yes, this is an essay with you providing evidence for your assertions.
Yes, this is a trick question.
