Journal 8 - Nov. 14, 2023
My eighth visit to Chinook was on November 14, 2023. This week, I arranged with Tyler
to come twice, once on Tuesday and once on Thursday. This is because she will be gone during
Thanksgiving week and will not be able to make up the 9th visit another time. Again, Tuesdays
seem to be calmer than Thursdays. The vibe of the school seems to be everyone is still feeling
the weekend and in a happier mood. When I usually come on Thursdays, it seems like everyone
is ready for the weekend and wants to be done with the week. Since Chinook also has early
releases on Fridays, everyone seems to be restless by the end of the day on Thursdays.
All of next week is half a week and early releases so this week seems to be a wrap up and
laid back. There were also a lot of students missing. When I got there, Tyler was starting to set up
for her youngest reading group. She decided to implement finger pointing while reading stories.
All of them have to follow along with their fingers so that they know where they are at and what
to read next. Following along with finger pointing seemed to help with paying attention and
following along. They were able to start reading easier when it was their turn.
Tyler said she was sick Friday and Monday so for the older groups she had to catch up
with grading their reading and comprehension sheets. There were about 30 assignments she had
to grade so she gave me the answer sheets so I could help her knock it out. With the
comprehension sheets, it seemed her older groups were struggling. There was not a single
student that got more than 60%. These were the lowest grades her groups have gotten in a while.
From what I see, they usually get about 70% or higher. There are a couple students that get lower
than that when they are struggling but then Tyler usually spends one-on-one time with them.
Tyler said that it seems they cannot do the work independently and she needs to adjust what they
are doing. When her groups transitioned into her classroom today, she talked to them about their
grades and what they need help with. They talked about if maybe they should switch stories for
comprehension to something a bit easier or if they want to continue with their current story.
