Chapter 9, Problem 1CT

Sea turtles have disappeared from many regions, and one way of trying to save them is to reintroduce them to areas where they have been wiped out. This is done by reburying eggs or by releasing newborn baby turtles on beaches. Why are eggs reburied or baby turtles released instead of fully grown individuals?

Summary Introduction

To determine: The reason why reburying eggs or newborn baby turtles are released instead of fully grown individuals in area where they have been wiped out.

Introduction: Sea turtles are the reptiles that belong to the order Testudines and the suborder Cryptodira. There are seven species of sea turtles. They are green, kemp’s ridley, loggerhead, olive ridley, flatback, hawksbill, and leatherback.

Explanation of Solution

Sea turtles have disappeared in many regions. On possible way to save sea turtles is to reintroduce them to the region where they have been wiped out. Reburying eggs or releasing newborn turtles to the beaches is a method to reintroduce sea turtles.

The sea turtles spend most of their life hundreds of miles away from where they lay eggs. But, also they have the ability to imprint the beach in their brain at the time of incubation or hatching. The newly born sea turtles appear to become imprinted to the beach where they are born. This helps them to find their birth place to lay eggs. Therefore, it is a best way to reintroduce sea turtles if the eggs are reburied instead of re-introducing adults to a new beach.

If using animals in medical experiments could save human lives, is it ethical to do so? In your answer, apply at least one ethical theory in support of your position.
You aim to test the hypothesis that the Tbx4 and Tbx5 genes inhibit each other's expression during limb development. With access to chicken embryos and viruses capable of overexpressing Tbx4 and Tbx5, describe an experiment to investigate whether these genes suppress each other's expression in the limb buds. What results would you expect if they do repress each other? What results would you expect if they do not repress each other?
You decide to delete Fgf4 and Fgf8 specifically in the limb bud. Explain why you would not knock out these genes in the entire embryo instead.
