The manufacturer of Boston and Vermont asphalt shingles provides its customers with a 20-year warranty on most of its products. To determine whether a shingle will last the entire Warranty period, accelerated-life testing is conducted at the manufacturing plant. Accelerated-life testing exposes the shingle to the stresses it would be subject to in a lifetime of normal use via a laboratory experiment that takes only a few minutes to conduct. In this test, a shingle is repeatedly scraped with a brush for a short period of time, and the shingle granules removed by the brushing are weighed (in grams). Shingles that experience low amount of granule loss are expected to last longer in normal use than shingles that experience high amount of granule loss. In this situation, a shingle should experience no more than 0.8 grams of granule loss if it is expected to last the length of the warranty period. The file Granule contains a sample of 170 measurements made on the company’s Boston shingles and 140 measurements made on Vermont shingles.
a. For the Boston shingles, construct a
b. For the Vermont shingles, construct a
c. Do you think the assumption needed to construct the confidence interval estimates in (a) and (b) is valid?
d. Based on the results of (a) and (b), what conclusions can you reach concerning the mean granule loss of the Boston and Vermont shingles?

- Is carbon dating? Why does it work? Give an example in which carbon dating would be useful.arrow_forwardWe’re interested in whether warm milk helps people go to sleep faster. We have a lab with EEG monitors that will provide us with data as to how many minutes elapse before someone falls asleep. (People spend the night in the lab.) In the first experimental condition, participants fall asleep as they usually do, without warm milk. In the second condition, participants drink 6 oz. of warm milk before going to sleep. Data for 5 participants is shown in the table below. Choose the appropriate type of t-test (independent samples or paired samples) and conduct the t-test and hypothesis test. Be sure to show all of your calculations either on your scratch work or in this text box. DO: Include the t-test value and your hypothesis test conclusion in this text box, not just in your scratch work.arrow_forwardA team of UMD students have invented an inhalable drug that they think will help people breathe better during hard exercise. They test the drug on 3 volunteers (A, B, and C) by measuring their levels of arterial oxygen before receiving the drug (their base level) and then after 5 and 10 minutes have elapsed, respectively. The results are listed in the table. - Strands of human hair absorb elements from the bloodstream and provide a historical record of both health and the use or nonuse of chemical substances. Hair grows at the rate of about one – half inch per month, and a person with long hair might be accused or absolved on the basis of a segment of hair that sprouted many months or years ago. By separately analyzing sections of the hair strand, scientists can even approximate the periods of time during which drug use was heavy, moderate, light or altogether absent. If a transit employee provides a strand of hair for drug testing, state the null and alternative hypothesis in verbal terms, then identify what would constitute a Type I error and Type II error in this situation.arrow_forwardSusan Sound predicts that students will learn most effectively with a constant background sound, as opposed to an unpredictable sound or no sound at all. She randomly divides twenty-four students into three groups of eight. All students study a passage of text for 30 minutes. Those in group 1 study with background sound at a constant volume in the background. Those in group 2 study with noise that changes volume periodically. Those in group 3 study with no sound at all. After studying, all students take a 10 point multiple choice test over the material. Mangoes are generally harvested at the mature green stage and ripen up during the marketing process of transport, storage, and so on. During this process, about 30% of the fruit is wasted. Because of this, the impact of harvest stage and storage conditions on the postharvest quality are of interest. In this experiment, the fruit was harvested at 80, 95, or 110 days after the fruit setting (the transition from flower to fruit) and then stored at temperatures of 20∘C, 30∘C, or 40∘C. For each harvest time and storage temperature, a random sample of mangoes was selected, and the time to ripening was measured. What are the factors, the treatments, and the response variables? Each of 20 volunteers is given the same mechanical puzzle to be solved as rapidly as possible. Before the task, the subjects are randomly assigned in equal numbers to receive two different sets of instructions. You'd rather not think about it, but a close friend encourages you to have a doctor look at it. You feel better when you look online and see that only about 196 of atypical moles are cancerous. But just in case, you make an appointment with a doctor. The doctor thinks the mole is suspicious and orders blood to be drawn for two tests, and it takes a few days for the lab results to come back. While waiting for the lab results you look up the reliability of the tests the doctor ordered. • Test A has a sensitivity of 38.8% and a specificity of 99.9% • Test B has a sensitivity of 86.2% and a specificity of 93.7% Complete the table below for Test A showing how many patients, out of 1000, you would expect to have a true positive, a false positive, a true negative, and a false negative. The owner has been told that she "must buy a surge suppressor to provide protection for her new hardware against possible surges or variations in the electrical current, which have the capacity to damage the computer. The amount of damage to the computer depends on the strength of the surge. It has been estimated that there is a 3% chance of incurring 450 dollar damage, 4% chance of incurring 250 dollar damage, and 15% chance of 75 dollar damage. An inexpensive suppressor, which would provide protection for only one surge, can be purchased. How much should the owner be willing to pay if she makes decisions on the basis of expected value?
