To discuss:
Functions of the calcium in the body; the normal range of blood calcium concentration; and causes and consequences of hypocalcemia and hypercalcemia.
Introduction:
Mineralization is a process (crystallization) that deposit phosphate, calcium and other ions (from blood plasma) in the tissues of the bone as hydroxyapatite. This process is initiated by the osteoblast by laying collagen fibers on the surface of the osteon. These fibers are coated with minerals that make the matrix hard. Only, if the concentration of the products (of above minerals) in the plasma reaches the critical value (solubility product), the hydroxyapatite formed. Sometimes, calcification is repressed by some inhibitors found in the tissue. This inhibitor is deactivated by osteoblast and it enables the precipitation of the salt in the matrix of the bone. The initially formed crystals perform like a “seed of crystals” which attract more phosphate and calcium from the plasma.

- Either hypercalcemia or Hypocalcemia and please explain the process the body goes through to bring blood calcium back to balance and explain what hormone is released, what's it job is,target tissues it affects and how it balances blood calcium.arrow_forwardManagement and treatment for Fasting Blood Sugar before, during and afterarrow_forwardHow low vitamin D relate to fragile bonearrow_forward

Statements TRUE FALSE Production of blood cells is NOT a function of skeletal system. Thyroid hormone may produce either osteogenesis or osteolysis. Bone matrix is composed primarily of Calcium and Magnesium which maybe withdrawn in small amounts as needed elsewhere in the body. Remodelling of bone is a function of osteoclasts and osteoblasts. A combination of the hormone, adrenal cortisol, and the bone cell, osteoclast, may result in osteoporosis. The addition of bone to its outer surface resulting in growth in diameter is called apposional growth. Once an individual reaches skeletal maturity, the bones undergo years of metabolic rest. Mitosis resulting in elongation of bone occurs at the articular cartilage. Most bones of the body are formed by intramembranous ossification.arrow_forward
