Concept explainers
Closed-circuit wind tunnels can produce higher speeds than open-circuit tunnels with the same power input because energy is recovered in the diffuser downstream from the test section. The kinetic energy ratio is a figure of merit defined as the ratio of the kinetic energy flux in the test section to the drive power. Estimate the kinetic energy ratio for the 40 ft × 80 ft wind tunnel at NASA-Ames described on page 267.

- A pump delivers 10 L/min with a pressure rise of 80 bar. The shaft speed is 1420 rev/min and the volumetric displacement is 8 cm3/rev. The theoretical torque is 11.4 Nm. Calculate the volumetric efficiency of the pump. (ii) If the power supply to the motor that drives the pump is now reduced by 50%, what would happen to the volumetric efficiency of the pump? Support your answer with relevant calculations. You may propose your own scientific assumptions.arrow_forwardA group of students is designing a small, round (axisymmetric), low-speed wind tunnel for their senior design project. Their design calls for the axial component of velocity to increase linearly in the contraction section from uz, 0 to uz, L. The air speed through the test section is to be uz, L = 120 ft/s. The length of the contraction is L = 3.0 ft, and the entrance and exit diameters of the contraction are D0 = 5.0 ft and DL = 1.5 ft, respectively. The air is at standard temperature and pressure. (a) Verify that the flow can be approximated as incompressible. (b) Generate an expression for the radial velocity component ur between z = 0 and z = L, staying in variable form. You may ignore frictional effects (boundary layers) on the walls. (c) Generate an expression for the stream function ? as a function of r and z. (d) Plot some streamlines and design the shape of the contraction, assuming that frictional effects along the walls of the wind tunnel contraction are negligible.arrow_forwardAn inflow to a turbine with a discharge of 20 m³/s leads to a ration speed of 150 rpm. The blades inlet edges have an angle of 120° to the direction of whirl. The outer diameter of the runner is 1.5 m and the runner inlet width is 1.0 m. 5.
