Chapter 55.2, Problem 3CC
Summary Introduction
To predict: How the NEP (net ecosystem production) of a forest that was heavily burned by a wild fire changes over time.
Concept introduction: In an ecosystem, the total primary production is said to be the GPP (gross primary production). NPP or net primary production is equal to about half of GPP. NEP is defined as the measurement of total biomass accumulation at a particular interval of time.

A mature oak and hickory forest ecosystem experienced an intense forest fire that burned the existing trees the ground. Despite the intensity of the
fire, some soils remained. Total biomass, species richness, and net productivity were reduced significantly after the initial disturbance. There have not
been any more fires since. Twenty years after the fire, there are medium-sized trees and bushes growing, as well as ferns and flowering plants. The
forest is in the middle, or intermediate, stage of succession. How has the current stage of succession affected total biomass, species richness, and
net productivity of the ecosystem?
O Total biomass remained the same, species richness decreased, net productivity remained the same
O Total biomass increased, species richness increased, net productivity decreased
O Total biomass increased, species richness increased, net…
WHAT IF? Suppose a developer proposes to clear-cuta forest that serves as a corridor between two parks. Tocompensate, the developer also proposes to add the samearea of forest to one of the parks. As a professional ecologist, how might you argue for retaining the corridor?
WRITE ABOUT A THEME: Energy and MatterDecomposition typically occurs quickly in moist tropicalforests. However, waterlogging in the soil of some moisttropical forests results over time in a buildup of organicmatter called “peat.” In a short essay (100–150 words), discussthe relationship of net primary production, net ecosystemproduction, and decomposition for such an ecosystem. AreNPP and NEP likely to be positive? What do you think wouldhappen to NEP if a landowner drained the water from atropical peatland, exposing the organic matter to air?
