Scientists use the particular structure of
To determine: The characteristics that distinguish archaea, bacteria, and protists.
Introduction: Biology is the scientific study of life and related biological aspects. In taxonomy of biological hierarchy, there is highest taxonomic rank of organism in a three-domain classification of taxonomy given by Carl Woese. The three domains of the biological hierarchy are archaea, bacteria, and eukarya. Prokaryotes are usually unicellular including bacteria and archaea, while eukaryotes are usually multicellular including protists, fungi, plants, and animals.
Explanation of Solution
Tabular representation: The characteristics that distinguish between archaea, bacteria, and protists other than nucleic acid structure and chemical differences are shown in Table 1.
Table 1: The characteristics that distinguish between archaea, bacteria, and protists
Criteria | Archaea | Bacteria | Protists |
Nuclear envelope | It is absent in archaea. | It is absent in bacteria. | It is present in protists. |
Membrane-enclosed organelles | Membrane-enclosed organelles are absent in archaea. | Membrane-enclosed organelles are absent in bacteria | Membrane-enclosed organelles are present in protists. |
Peptidoglycan in cell wall | Peptidoglycan is absent in archaea. | Peptidoglycan is present in bacteria. | Peptidoglycan is absent in protists. |
Membrane lipids | Some branched hydrocarbons are present in archaea. | Unbranched hydrocarbons are present in the bacteria. | Unbranched hydrocarbons are present in protists. |

- What distinguishes protists from prokaryotes? What distinguishes protists from fungi, land plants, and animals?arrow_forwardYou are given five test tubes, each containing an unknown protist, and your task is to read the description below and match these five protists that you know to the correct test tube. -Paramecium -Pfiesteria (dinoflagellate) -Navicula (diatom) -Plasmodium -Amoeba In test tube 1, you sketch the organism and come up with a picture that looks like the one below. You note the organism appears to be “eating” the smaller microorganism. Chemical analysis of test tube 2 indicates the presence of a chemical that is toxic to fish and humans. In test tube 3, you detect the presence of substantial amounts of silica. Microscopic analysis of organisms in tube 4 reveals the presence of an apicoplast in the organism Microscopic analysis of the contents in tube 5 reveals the presence of one large macronucleus and several small micronuclei in each organism Match the description with the correct protistarrow_forwardDifferentiate the following groups of organisms : Archaebacteria (ancient bacteria), Eubacteria (true bacteria), Protista, Fungi, Plantae, Animalia.arrow_forward

Group of answer choices Some protists are mixotrophic Certain protists share a common ancestor with land plants Some protists are photosynthetic prokaryotes which are similar to the ancestral chloroplast Protists are a polyphyletic group of organisms that often bear little resemblance to each other Although most protists are unicellular, some protists are multicellular as wellarrow_forwardWhich of the following processes are involved in thereproduction of protists ?(a) Binary fission and budding(b) Cell fusion and zygote formation(c) Spore formation and cyst formation(d) All of the above Please try to break the solutions into as many steps as practically possible and the steps should come one by one and they should be short and crisp and plagiarism-free.arrow_forwardYou isolated a new microorganism that has single cells and appear to lack a nucleus.Chemical analysis show the presence of both DNA and RNA in the cytoplasm and pseudomurein in the cell wall.
