To determine

The use of cooling tower in a water-cooled system.

Answer to Problem 1RQ

A cooling tower in water cooled system is used to reject thewaste heat into the atmosphere with the help of cooled air.

Explanation of Solution

A water-cooled system is used to cool the water directly by the evaporator coil.

Water cooling system consist of water pump, fan, radiator cap, water jacket, thermostat valve and temperature gauge.

Cooling tower uses the evaporation of water to remove heat and to cool the working fluid.

A cooling tower in water cooled system is used to reject the waste heat into the atmosphere with the help of cooled air. This is the evaporative type heat rejection system.

The function of cooling tower is like a heat exchanger which exchange the heat between hot water and cooled air. The heat from water transferred to air and it rises the air temperature then dischargeto atmosphere.

Refrigerant-134a is expanded isentropically from 600 kPa and 70°C at the inlet of a steady-flow turbine to 100 kPa at the outlet. The outlet area is 1 m2, and the inlet area is 0.5 m2. Calculate the inlet and outlet velocities when the mass flow rate is 0.65 kg/s. Use the tables for R-134a.   The inlet velocity is  m/s.   The outlet velocity is  m/s.
