Introduction:

One of the important processes required by the body in order to supply oxygen to all its parts is called breathing. Medically, it is described as the process which involves inhalation of air from the environment by means of nose or mouth into our lungs and then further exhalation of unwanted gases back to the environment is termed as breathing.

Answer to Problem 1.1A

Breathing can also be called ventilation.

Explanation of Solution

Breathing starts with inhalation of air from mouth or nose which then passes down to the lungs through throat and windpipe further into lungs through bronchial passage. The alveoli absorb the oxygen which is then passed into the blood. The blood is pumped by the heart and supplied to other cells and tissues. The cells use up the oxygen and release carbon dioxide. This carbon dioxide is sent back to the lungs which then exhales it into the environment.

Pulmonary Ventilation is referred to as breathing. It is defined as the movement of air in and out of the lungs. It is same as breathing. Atmospheric pressure, air pressure in alveoli and pressure in the pleural cavity drives ventilation.

Conclusion

Hence, breathing is also known as ventilation.
