In the environment, a wide variety of nitrogen is present in a variety of chemical forms. This includes nitrite (NO2­), organic nitrogen (N), nitrous oxide (N2O), ammonia (NH4+), nitric oxide (NO) or inorganic nitrogen gas (N2), and nitrate (NO3­).
