Most sharks avoid humans, but large sharks of some species can be dangerous to swimmers and divers. However, shark attacks on people are rare. In the United States, dog attacks kill 30 times more people than sharks do. A U.S. resident is 75 times more likely to die from a lightning strike than from a shark attack, and a beachgoer is far more likely to drown than to be bitten by a shark. Nonetheless, unprovoked shark attacks do occur. During 2014, for example, there were 72 documented attacks in the world, 3 of them fatal. About 65% of attacks were on people who were surfing. To reduce the (already very small) risk of a shark attack, experts recommend several precautions. For example, stay in a group while in the water, because most shark attacks are on lone individuals. Stay out of the water at night, dawn, or dusk, when sharks are most active. Refrain from entering the water when bleeding from an open wound, because sharks can detect blood in the water. And avoid areas that are being actively fished, because sharks are attracted to baitfish.

- Animals have the innate ability to escape from predation, give its example.arrow_forwardJenny is identifying insects and finds a camo moth. A camo moth looks like the bark of a tree and can easily blend in with its surroundings. Which of the following is a result of this ability? A) The camo moth uses less energy. B) The camo moth needs less food. C) The camo moth has a greater chance of survival. D) The camo moth has fewer offspring to care for.arrow_forwardFoxes are carnivores that bury their food to consume it later. They can capture and bury food at a very fast rate. Explain how this adaptation helps them when competing for resources. A) The foxes bat-like ears radiate body heat and help keep it cool on summer days. B) The foxes' thick fur gives it the ability to maintain its core temperature during the cold nights. C) The foxes' claws give them the ability to capture and bury their food very quickly, giving them an advantage over the competition. D) The foxes' speed, allows them to run faster than any of the other animals in its habitat.arrow_forward
- The sea slugs (nudibranches) may protect themselves by using which of the following methods? a. They use camouflage. b. They use defensive weapons taken from their prey (toxins and nematocysts). c. They make and secrete distasteful substances. d. They hide in their shells. e. Their raspy radula may be used as a defense organ to injure potential predators.arrow_forwardBarnacles are crustaceans that live in the ocean. Barnacle larvae are motile and secrete a sticky substance that allows them to attach to a suitable substrate. As they mature into sedentary adults, they secrete layers of calcium carbonate that serve as a protective covering. Some barnacles have been known to attach to the sides of whales. This benefits the barnacles in that they are constantly transported to locations with new sources of food. The whales neither benefit nor are harmed by the presence of barnacles. Barnacles follow r selection strategies. How would the interaction between barnacles and whales be described? a) Commensalism b) Competition c) Mutualism d) Parasitismarrow_forwardBarnacles are crustaceans that live in the ocean. Account for this observation.arrow_forwardFeral cat in wild compared to domestic cat are they larger or same size? Feral cats are they tougher then domestic cats for predators like bobcats or raccoons or possum or skunks or weasel? If feral cat has litter how they defend the litter from predators like dogs gain pack to surrive as cats won’t?arrow_forward
- Great white sharks prefer marine mammals like seals but can eat a number of other prey items, including birds and fish. According to the table below, what is the critical search time for seals, above which great white sharks should choose to eat an albatross if they encounter one? Prey item: seal (energy = 60 Mcals, handling time = 5 minutes) Prey item: albatross (energy = 10 Mcals, handling time = 2 minutes)arrow_forwardFish produce a hormone called isotocin, a hormone that is similar to oxytocin in mammals. Both hormones, oxytocin and isotocin, have been linked to social behaviors including the suppression of social anxiety, trust, and attachment. Prior to this study, the relationship between isotocin in the bloodstream and the amount of aggression or submission individual cichlid fish display was unknown. The researchers hypothesized that isotocin would suppress aggressive behaviors in cichlids to promote social cohesion as these fish exist in large social groups (schools). To address this hypothesis, each of 10 fish were exposed to two treatments, 1 week apart. One at a time, a fish was randomly selected from the group of 10 and either injected with a saline solution (that served as the control) or with isotocin. After this injection, the fish was returned to its group and the amount of aggressive and submissive behaviors the fish demonstrated was recorded for the next 10 minutes.
