Introduction:

The wall of the gastrointestinal tract from the mouth to anus contains four major layers, the mucosa, submucosa, the muscularis and the serosa.

The mucosa is the innermost layer that lines the lumen of the gastrointestinal tract while the serosa is the outermost layer of the digestive tract. The mucosa is followed by the submucosa layer which in turn is followed by the muscularis layer.

The muscularis is also known as muscularis externa and contains smooth muscle cells arranged in inner circular layer and outer longitudinal layer.
