Chapter 23, Problem 9WWTS
Summary Introduction

Introduction:

In a day, a regular healthy adult passes about 1 to 2 liters of urine. When urine is excreted out more than 2 liters, it can lead to polyuria or diuresis. Intake of some drugs or fluids can also make an individual to pass 20 liters of urine per day. The patients with symptoms of diabetes also pass polyuria called as oliguria. On medical examination, urinalysis is the most important analysis since it examines both the chemical and physical nature of the urine.

Glucose is normally 100% reabsorbed, such that no glucose is excreted in the urine. Explain why a person with diabetes and a blood glucose level of 450 mg/dL will have glucose excreted in his urine.
The concentration of urea in urine is always much higher than the concentration in plasma. Does this mean that urea is secreted? Hint: remember that concentration is a ratio.
What would you expect the value of renal clearance of glucose to be in a healthy individual?  Why?
