Chapter 17, Problem 1R

What is the total current draw when all six fluorescent luminaires are turned on?

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark
To determine

Find the total current drawn when all the six fluorescent luminaires are turned on.

Answer to Problem 1R

The total current (I) that is drawn when all the six fluorescent luminaires are turned on is 9.2A.

Explanation of Solution

Discussion:

The recreation room consists of six lay in fluorescent luminaires. One fluorescent luminaire consists of four 32W lamp.

No.of watts for one luminaire=4×32W=128W

No.of watts for six luminaire=6×128W=768W

Generally, the power factor of fluorescent luminaire lies between 0.5and0.9. Let us assume the power factor (cosϕ) as 0.762.

No.of VA for six luminaire=No.of watts for six luminairecosϕ

Substitute 768W for No.of watts for six luminaire and 0.762 for cosϕ in the above equation to find No.of VA for six luminaire.

No.of VA for six luminaire=768W0.762=1008VA{1W=1V1A}

The current drawn by the six fluorescent luminaires is calculated as follows:

I=VAfor six luminairessingle phase voltage (1)

Substitute 1008VA for VAfor six luminaires and 120V for single phase voltage in equation (1) to find I.

I=1008VA120V=8.4A

One fluorescent luminaire is controlled by the 3-way switch. It also controls the stairway luminaire of 100W.

When the staircase luminaire is turned on, the value of VA becomes as follows:

Total VA for six luminaires=1008VA+100W=1008VA+100VA{1W=1V1A}=1108VA

Substitute 1008VA for Total VA for six luminaires, and 120V for single phase voltage to find I.

I=1108VA120V=9.2A

Conclusion:

Thus, the total current (I) that is drawn when all the six fluorescent luminaires are turned on is 9.2A.
