Concept introduction:
A homogeneous mixture of two or more substances is known as a solution. It can exist in any of the phases. Saltwater, rubbing alcohol, bleach, and air are some examples of solutions. Every solution has two components: solute and solvent. The solute is present in a smaller quantity while the solvent is present in a larger quantity.
The three types of solutions are as follows:
1. Saturated solution: It has the maximum amount of solute dissolved in the solvent. Any extra amount of solute, if added to the solvent remains undissolved in it.
2. Unsaturated solution: It has a lesser amount of solute than that can be actually dissolved in the solvent is known as an unsaturated solution. Any extra amount of solute, if added to the solvent gets dissolved in it.
3. Supersaturated solution: It contains an extra amount of solute than the actual amount dissolved in the solvent. It is usually prepared by the addition of compounds in hot water. The solution is first heated and then cooled. If some amount of the solute has been crystallized, it indicates that the solution has some extra solute in it and therefore, the solution is supersaturated.
