As part of an experiment to see how different types of soil cover would affect slicing tomato production,
Marist College students grew tomato plants under different soil cover conditions. Groups of three plants each had one
of the following treatments
• bare soil
• a commercial ground cover
• black plastic
• straw
• compost
All plants grew under the same conditions and were the same variety. Students recorded the weight (in grams) of
tomatoes produced by each of the n = 15 plants:

Charise randomly selected 120 loops and noted the color of each. Shown in the table are her data. Color Count Orange 28 Yellow 21 Purple 16 Red Blue 25 14 Green 16 We want to test Ho: Froot Loops contain an equal proportion of each flavor versus Ha: Froot Loops do not contain an equal proportion of each flavor. Use a chi-square goodness-of-fit test to compute a test statistic and P-value. Do these data provide convincing evidence at the 5% significance level that Kellogg's Froot Loops do not contain an equal proportion of each color? Because the P-value of 0.3495 0.05, we cannot reject the null hypothesis. We cannot conclude that Froot Loops do not contain an equal proportion of each color. Because the P-value of 0.2455 0.05, we cannot reject the null hypothesis. We cannot conclude that Froot Loops do not contain an equal proportion of each color.arrow_forwardAt a university,a professor is interested in whether the size of tableware influences how much College Students eat.He randomly assigns 100 college students to one of two groups:the first is served a meal using normal-sized table ware, while the second is served the same meal, but using tableware that is 20percent smaller than normal. He records how much food is consumed by each group.Identify the 1.Population 2.Sample 3.Experimental units 4.Explanatory variable 5.Treatment 6.Response variablearrow_forward
- A group of eight individuals with high cholesterol levels were given a new drug that was designed to lower cholesterol levels. Cholesterol levels, in milligrams per deciliter, were measured before and after treatment for each individual, with the following results: Before: 281, 230, 284, 289, 258, 270, 234, 287. After: 216, 211, 174, 208, 166, 222, 197, 192. Construct 899.8% confidence and vote for the main reduction in cholesterol level. In the experiment, a group of college students was told that they were participating in a manual dexterity study. Half of the students were given a stack of money to count and the other half got a stack of blank pieces of paper. After the counting task, the participants were asked to dip their hands into bowls of very hot water (122 degrees) and rate how uncomfortable it was. The following data show ratings of pain similar to the results obtained in the study. Is there a significant difference in reported pain between the two conditions? - Using the same anti-venom study, answer the following questions. A study was done on children (6 months to 18 years of age) who had (nonlethal) scorpion stings. Researchers wanted to know the effectiveness of a new anti-venonm. Each child was randomly assigned to receive a shot of the anti-venom or a placebo shot. Researchers recorded whether or not their condition improved over the next four hours. a. Identify the population for the study. b. Identify the sample for the study. (HINT: See #1) c. Was this an observational study or a controlled experiment? Explain how you know. d. Assuming the rest of the study was well-designed, use your answers to discuss whether it would be reasonable to conclude that the new anti-venom is effective at treating nonlethal scorpion stings in children.
