Explain how a micrometer is read.

Expert Solution & Answer

To determine

How a micrometer is read?

Explanation of Solution

The micrometer is the most used instrument to measure during the engine service and repair. In a micrometer, the thimble revolves over the sleeve on a screw with 20 threads per inch. Each revolution of the thimble drives the spindle by 0.025 inches. The thimble has 25 equally spaced lines and each line represent 0.001 inches.

To read the micrometer, first read the value from the sleeve of the micrometer. Here, each reading corresponds to 0.025 inches. Then add the thimble reading the measurement. Each thimble reading represents 0.001 inches.

Add together the values from the sleeve and thimble to get the micrometer reading.
