The skeletal muscle fibers are mainly classified on the basis of the speed of generation of adenosine triphosphate (ATP):

Slow oxidative fibers are those, which contract slowly and use aerobic respiration for the production of ATP.

Fast oxidative fibers are those, which contract fast and use aerobic mode of respiration but, can also switch to anaerobic respiration for the production of ATP.

Fast glycolytic fibers are those that contract very fast and use anaerobic respiration for the production of ATP.
