Expert Solution
Step 1
Erik Erikson was a developmental psychologist who believed that a person develops in stages and biological, socioeconomic, and psychological factors affect development. He termed his theory of development as psychosocial development theory. Each stage in Erikson's theory has some common elements which are:
- Tasks: These are the actions of the individual which are driven by their inner pattern.
- Crisis: This is caused by the conflict between the internal plan or inner pattern and the social or environmental factors.
- Central Process: The process by which the crisis or the conflict is resolved.
- Core Pathology: This is developed is the crisis is resolved ineffectively.
- Prime Adaptive Ego Quality: This is developed if the crisis is resolved positively.
The developmental stages are as follows including the crisis, core pathology, and the prime adaptive ego quality:
- Trust vs Mistrust (Withdrawal/Hope): 0-18 Months
- Autonomy vs Shame (Compulsion/Will): 18 Months - 3 Years
- Initiative vs Guilt (inhibition/purpose): 3-5 years
- Industry vs Inferiority (Inertia/competence): 5-12 years
- Individual Identity vs Role Confusion (Repudiation/fidelity to values and ideologies): 12-18 years
- Intimacy vs Isolation (exclusivity/love): 18-40 year
- Generativity vs Stagnation (rejectivity/care): 40-65 years
- Integrity vs Despair (disdain/wisdom): 65+ years
