What are the three components of an attitude?
Expert Solution
Step 1
An attitude is characterized as a set of belief and emotions which constitutes one's behaviours towards an object, individual, or a situation. Attitudes are the evaluative statements or a positive or negative response towards any object, idea, situation or a person. It can be described as a personal choice of a feeling or behaviour towards someone or something.
Step 2
An Attitude consists of three components; cognitive, affective and behavioral component.
- Cognitive component: The cognitive component of an attitude consists of thoughts, attributes and belief a person holds towards something. It is the judgement or belief system fragment of an attitude. Example: A person holding a belief or opinion that "All dogs can bite and our dangerous to us."
- Affective component: The affective component of an attitude involves our feelings and emotions regarding a person, thing or a situation. This is our emotional response to something. Example: "I feel really scared and unsafe around dogs."
- Behavioral component: The behavioral or conative component of an attitude is our intent to act in a certain way towards an object, a person or event. The behavioral component of attitude influences how we behave or act in a situation. Example: "I will run in an opposite direction if I see a dog running towards me."
