What are the key characteristics of social classes in the United States?
Social inequality is present in each society, past or present. Social stratification is the process of dividing people into strata. These layers are decided on the basis of presence or absence of certain characteristics like innate qualities, material possession and performances. Social stratification is not much reflective of biological differences. It is more about placing people into a hierarchy of status on the basis of their social differences in terms of access to rights and privileges. Among the types of social stratification the most prevalent in modern society is class based stratification. Class positions are not ascribed but acquired through achievement, talent or skill.
