Expert Solution
Step 1
Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance in the blood and in all the cells of the body. When it builds within the inner walls of arteries, it solidifies and turns into plaque. That plaque can contract the artery walls and decrease blood stream, which can cause blocks that can lead to blood clots, heart attacks, or strokes. There are three types of cholesterol-
- Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol: When too much LDL cholesterol is present in the circulatory system, it can clog arteries and put an individual at risk for a heart attack or stroke. It’s created normally by the body.
- High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol: High levels of HDL cholesterol expel excess plaque from arteries, slowing its buildup and helping to secure against a heart attack. Low levels, however, can really increment the risk.
- Triglycerides: A form of fat made within the body that circulates in the blood. High triglycerides may elevate the risk of heart disease and stroke.
