CHINA was among the countries that confronted an aggressive and industrializing West while
maintaining its formal independence (unlike the other Asian countries who were conquered and
colonized by the west). JAPAN, The OTTOMAN EMPIRE, PERSIA (now Iran), ETHIOPIA, and
SIAM (now Thailand) also resisted the West (Europe and America). Latin America also falls in this
category. The governments of these regions avoided outright incorporation into European colonial
empires, keeping some ability to resist European aggression and to reform or transform their own
societies.
But even though these countries resisted European invasion, they needed to deal with European
influence in other ways;
FIRST, they faced the immense military might and political ambitions of rival European states.
SECOND, they became involved in networks of trade, investment, and sometimes migration that
rose from an industrializing and capitalist Europe to generate a new world economy.
THIRD they were touched by various aspects of traditional European culture, as some among
