How is the age distribution pattern of the Hawaiian Islands–Emperor Seamount chain explained by the position of the Hawaiian hotspot? What could have caused the curious bend in the chain? |
INTRODUCTION:
The volcanoes in the Hawaiian Islands move from Southernmost of the islands to the northwestward. Each volcano has long age before undergoing extinction. They move from Suiko Seamount which has an age of 65 million years to Detroit Seamount which has an age of 81 million years old.
HAWAIIN CHAIN:
From these volcanic motions, it can be concluded that, Pacific plate has moved towards the Northwest and the underlying mantle was remained stationary which results in the formation of hotspot because the old age volcanoes moved along with the plate and creates new volcanoes. This Hawaiian hotspot forms chain of volcanoes called as an Emperor Seamount chain.
