Arterial blood pressure is the pressure of the column of blood present in the arterial system. It is required to provide the motive force of filtration at the capillary bed, thus assuring nutrition to the tissue cells, urine, and lymph formation.
Arterial blood pressure is a function of the product of cardiac output and peripheral resistance. Hence it is affected by the conditions that affect either or both of these. Generally, an increase in the cardiac output increases the systolic blood pressure, while the increase in the peripheral resistance increases the diastolic blood pressure.
