Differences in the intellectual strengths of men and women have grown larger in recent years. True or False?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Intelligence can be described as an individual's ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills. Intelligence involves different mental abilities including logic, reasoning, problem-solving, and planning.

Step 2

The notable structural and functional differences between male and female;

  • There is structural difference in the grey matter of both sexes. A 2014 meta analysis suggests that the left hemisphere of males have more volume and density while females have more volume in their right hemisphere
  • The Hippocampus in female is larger than in male.
  • There is a functional difference in amygdala among the two sexes which might be responsible for the behavioral difference in a male and female.
  • There are sex differences in neural activities.
  • Some evidences suggests that the two sexes carrying out a similar tasks have shown differences in the areas of brain being activated during the task.

Despite of these studies, the outcomes are inclined more towards the differences within a sex than among the two sexes. Various research studies have been conducted to determine the differences in intellectual strengths among both the genders. The physiological differences are not significant in determining the difference in intelligence. On the basis of spatial ability, academic and mathematical performances one can account for the sex differences in intellectual abilities. The intelligence tests used worldwide are constructed and are generalized for both the genders. Therefore, it is considered that there are no significant sex differences in intelligence.
