Chemicals:
Diluted NaOH solution
Acetic acid
5% NaOH soln
Benzoic acid
5% NaHCO;
Phenol
Ferric chloride solution
Tollen's reagent
Procedure:
A) Reaction with sodium hydroxide
Place 3 ml of acetic acid into a test tube and add 2 ml of 5% NaOH. Shake and note the
solubility. Repeat using 1g of benzoic acid.
B) Reaction with sodium bicarbonate
Place 1 ml of acetic acid into a test tube and add 1 ml of 5% NaHCO; solution. Shake and note
the solubility. Repeat using 1 ml of phenol.
C) Ferric chloride test
Place 1 ml of acetic acid into a test tube and add 1 ml of dilute NaOH. Add 5 drops of ferric
chloride solution. Boil and note the color changes.
D) Tollen's test
Place 1 ml of acetic acid into a test tube and add 1 ml of tollen's reagent. Warm in water bath
and take note of the silver mirror formed.
E) Esterification
Place 1 ml of acetic acid into a test tube and add 1 ml of ethanol. Add 2 drops of conc. sulfuric
acid. Warm in water bath and take note of the odor of the product formed.
F) Hydrolysis of esters
Place 30 ml of ethyl acetate into a small round bottom flask. Add 10 mL of 5% NaOH soln and
boiling chips. Attach condenser and reflux for 30 minutes. Cool the flux and acidify with dilute
