Analyze whether you would welcome the use of computer-based formative assessments in your classroom, or whether you would prefer to continue with your reliable paper-based formative assessments. Explain why or why not. Answers I prefer to continue with paper-based formative assessments because they are always more fair and reliable. Paper-based formative assessments are one of the traditional methods for gathering this feedback, and they can take various forms, such as quizzes, tests, worksheets, and assignments. It also prevents people from cheating each other. Moreover, it is effective and efficient. Hence, a power outage will not affect the assessment. For instance, in Guyana, we always have constant electrical problems, and we often have sudden power cuts; therefore, with the paper-based assessment, the teacher usually prepares it one week before the test is due. Hence, if there are power outages on the same day the assessment is conducted, it never affects the process. However, the concept of paper-based formative assessments, their advantages and disadvantages, Firstly, the advantages of Paper-Based Formative Assessments are that Paper-based assessments
can cover a wide range of topics, subjects, and skills. They can include multiple-choice questions, short-answer questions, essays, and more, making them suitable for various learning objectives. Also, They are relatively simple to administer and can be conducted in a classroom without requiring specialized technology or equipment. Teachers can provide timely feedback, crucial for students to identify and correct mistakes, reinforcing the learning process. Hence, Multiple-choice questions can be scored objectively and quickly, reducing the potential for bias in grading. Paper-based assessments can be stored as historical records of a student's progress. Many educators and students are familiar with this format, which may contribute to a sense of familiarity and comfort. On the other hand, paper-based formative assessments have disadvantages. They are typically static and need more interactivity and multimedia elements that digital assessments can offer. Also, scoring open-ended questions can be time-consuming for educators, especially in larger classes. Paper-based assessments may not provide detailed analytics on a student's performance, making it challenging to identify specific areas where students need improvement. Using paper can contribute to environmental concerns, including deforestation and waste production. In conclusion, Incorporating formative assessments, whether paper-based or digital, can significantly enhance the learning process, provided that educators use them effectively to inform instruction and support student progress. It is essential to choose the correct assessment method based on your educational objectives and the needs of your students.
