Report
Assignment 3 - Overview Assignment 3 will focus on students undertaking a policy evaluation or small research project using real-world data. Students will be given a list of potential datasets that have been ‘cleaned’ and are able to be analysed, alongside some suggested research questions. Students will be asked to identify a small research project using this dataset. It is anticipated that this project will be similar to the case studies used throughout the course, though it will be much smaller in scale. Datasets are available on the Wattle site under ‘Data Options for Assignment 3’. The assignment has a maximum of 2,000 words (including footnotes, but excluding references) and is worth 40% of the total mark. Learning outcomes that the assignment will test are: 1 (Interpret data to inform real world decisions), 2 (Understand the assumptions, strengths and limitations of different types of data for informing decision making), 3 (Develop robust analytical questions and identify the most effective techniques to answer these questions), 4 (Communicate complex data to a non-specialist audience), and 5 (Assess the robustness of data for decision making). Assignment 3 – Detailed questions In undertaking your policy evaluation/research project, please answer the following sub- questions: 1. What does the existing literature say about the research or policy area, and where are the gaps in our knowledge? 2. What is your research question or evaluation question? 3. What are the main assumptions underlying your analysis? 4. What are some of the strengths and limitations in the data that you will be using? 5. What are the main findings from your data analysis? 6. What are the policy implications from your analysis? 7. What further research questions and/or policy evaluations would you recommend? All students will be expected to perform some data analysis as part of the assignment. However, as there is a range of background skills and knowledge, there is considerable scope to vary the emphasis within the project. Those students with less familiarity with analytical techniques have the option to focus on the existing literature and the design of the analysis. Those with a more analytical background could focus on more detailed analysis. Those with a data background could focus on the strengths and limitations of the data. All students, however, are expected to at least touch on each of the 7 sub-questions. Submissions are to be made through the Wattle website and are due on Friday 26 th May 2022 at 9am .
Assignment submission Online Submission: Unless an exemption has been approved by the Associate Dean (Education) a submission must be through Turnitin Assignments are submitted using Turnitin in the course Wattle site. You will be required to electronically sign a declaration as part of the submission of your assignment. Please keep a copy of the assignment for your records. The ANU is using Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the ANU Online website. Extensions and penalties Extensions and late submission of assessment pieces are covered by the Student Assessment (Coursework) Policy and Procedure. The Course Convener may grant extensions for assessment pieces that are not tutorial participation. If you need an extension, you must request it in writing on or before the due date. If you have documented and appropriate medical evidence that demonstrates you were not able to request an extension on or before the due date, you may be able to request it after the due date. Late assignments will attract a 5% deduction per working day. Resubmission of assignments The resubmission of assignments is not permitted in this course. Under exceptional circumstances, a written application may be submitted to the convenor stating reasons for a request to resubmit. The convenor will then make a decision for resubmission/re-sit and email the student notifying them of the decision. Referencing requirements Students may use their preferred referencing style (e.g. APA or Harvard). Students must ensure that they are consistent with the use of their preferred style. SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS The University offers a number of support services for students. Information on these is available online from http://students.anu.edu.au/studentlife/
Assessment Criteria 1. Relevant literature identified and accurately summarised 2. Clearly articulated research/evaluation question which is related to other research and the gap in the literature 3. Logical and clear analysis plan or program logic/theory of change with relevant assumptions identified The analysis plan describes how the data being used will help answer the research or evaluation question Program logic/theory of change is clearly articulated and is related to the evaluation question Range of assumptions identified and their implications discussed 4. Range of relevant strengths and limitations of the data being used identified and their implications discussed 5. Quality of analysis of data Appropriate analysis methods used (these can be very simple (e.g. plotting the data) or quite sophisticated (e.g., regression modelling)) Analysis competently undertaken 6. The findings present are reasonable and are related to the data analysis and potentially the literature review 7. Relevant implications for policy raised and justified using analysis of data and potentially the literature review 8. Interesting further research / policy evaluation questions recommended and which follow from the analysis presented it the paper 9. Clarity of organisational structure, presentation and focus and appropriate and accurate use of sources Clear and logical structure of paper Clarity of expression Spelling, word choice, grammar and punctuation Accurate referencing
