Homework 1 (non-Excel portion)
Spring 2024
Must be uploaded into Canvas by 11:55 pm on Monday, January 22, 2024.
Upon submitting this homework, I affirm that I have not given or received unauthorized aid
on this homework, and I completed this work honestly and according to the instructor’s guidelines.
Answers may be typed or handwritten.
Homeworks are graded on completion, not accuracy. Work must be shown on the homework to receive full credit. Credit for completion will not
be awarded if adequate effort has not been shown. Each homework is worth 2.5 points. So, for example, if a student gets a score of 2.5, it means that they did all the work, it does not
mean the answers are all correct
.
In order to promote professional development of students in learning the importance of appearance and presentation of submitted work, 0.1 point will be deducted from homework scores for each the following conditions that are not met (students could lose a total of 0.2 points for not meeting these conditions):
Questions numbered and done in order (all work and answers for each question in one place)
Increased space between each question if the answers are included on the posted homework assignment
If you take any definitions/concepts directly from the packet, please cite the page number in the packet
.
YOU MUST SHOW WORK TO GET CREDIT.
1.
According to the syllabus, explain in your own words
how homeworks are graded.
Homeworks are graded on completion, not accuracy. However, points might be deducted (Max 0.2) if the student fails to fulfill the following instructions: “Questions numbered and done in order (all work and answers for each question in one place)” and “Increased space between each question if the answers are included on the posted homework assignment”.
what the penalties are for turning in late homework.
-
Students will receive a score of 1.5 out of 2.5 if Homework is sent within 8 hours after Dropbox is closed.
-
Late homework must be submitted between the timelapse of more than 8 hours after the Dropbox
has closed but before the Dropbox has been closed for 24 hours will receive a maximum of 0.5 points out of 2.5 points.
-
Late homework sent to the email after Dropbox closes 24 hours ago will receive no credit.
.
2.
According to the “Academic Integrity” section of the syllabus, explain in your own words what happens when a student has
a first offense of academic integrity.
The student will receive zero credit on the homework/exam.
a second offense of academic integrity.
The student will be sent to talk with the Dean and his final grade will suffer a deduction of two letters drop.
3.
According to the syllabus
explain in your own words what University Policy G:9 says.
When a student is informed that academic dishonest is suspected, he is not allowed to drop the class.
what time Exam 1, Exam 2, and Exam 3 begin.
EXAM #1 – Monday evening, February 5, 2024, 6:00-7:15 pm on Canvas 20%
EXAM #2 – Monday evening, March 18, 2024, 6:00-7:30 pm on Canvas 20%
EXAM #3 – Wednesday evening, April 17, 2024, 6:00-7:30 pm on Canvas
how much time a student gets for the exam if they start late.
The student will only receive the remaining time on the exam is all the time they will be allowed.
what happens if a student does not take the exam at the specified time and has not contacted the instructor.
The student will not receive full credit for the exam and may receive no credit at all.
4.
According to the “Homework Assignments” section of the syllabus, explain in your own words what students are allowed to do and what they aren’t allowed to do regarding working with others when completing homework assignments. It says that even though the work is in a group the main purpose of it is to test each individual skill and knowledge. Students are not allowed to copy from another students since it is plagiarism, and they are not allowed to use AI for any purpose.
(Questions 1-4 can be completed after the Introductory Lecture.)
5.
Name the five uses of models that were discussed in class and listed on p. 12 of the course packet. You must list all five to get credit. Number your answers so the graders can see that five are listed.
1.
Making better decisions
2.
Communication
3.
Understanding a concept
4.
Identifying relationships
5.
Developing new models
6.
What are the two factors that are important in determining the appropriate statistical concept or technique for a given situation that were listed on p. 12 of the course packet? Both must be given in order to get credit. Number your answers.
1. Purpose or Specific or Specific Objective
2. Type of Data
7.
Which of the factors listed in Question 6 above should you work on first and why? You must list the factor and tell why in order to get any credit. Number your answers (#1 for the factor and #2 for why).
1. Type of Data
2. WHY?
Because the type of Data determines what type of test are going to be made.
8.
What is the difference between nominal and ordinal data. Give an example of each. Use #1 through #4 for your answers (definition of nominal, example, definition of ordinal, example).
1. Nominal: Data units are placed in class and don't have a specific order.
2. Example: Eye Color
3. Ordinal: Data units are ranked in some natural order.
4. Example: Student Class Standing
9.
What is the difference between interval scale data and ratio scale data. Give an example of each. Use #1 through #4 for your answers (definition of interval scale, example, definition of ratio scale, example).
1. Interval Scale: no defined zero value; ratio is not meaningful
2. Example, Temperature
3.Ratio Scale:
defined zero value; ratio is meaningful
4. Example, Prices
(Questions 5-9 can be completed after Lecture 1.)
10.
Tell which kind of data is used for bar charts and which kind of data is used for histograms? Number your answers.
1. Bar charts are used for qualitative data 2. Histograms are used for quantitative data
11.
How are frequency histograms and relative frequency histograms similar and how are they different? Number your answers (#1 for similarity and #2 for difference).
1. Frequency histograms and relative frequency histograms are similar in the fact that they both represent quantitative data sets.
2. They are different in the fact that Frequency Histograms has number on the y-axis representative of the frequencies, and the relative frequency histogram has frequency percentages on the y-axis.
12.
Draw or type a stem and leaf diagram (do not use computer software) for the following data set:
24
, 17
, 29
, 56
, 59
, 41
, 47

Is this distribution symmetric, skewed right (positive), or skewed left (negative)?
Skewed left (Negative)
(Questions 10-12 can be completed after Lecture 2.)
13.
Interpret the following: The 60
th
percentile of home prices in Springfield is $102,000.00.
This means that 60% of Springfield home prices are equal to $102,000.00 or less.
14.
For the following data set, find the mean, median, and mode(s): 8, 14, 16, 10, 18, 10, 22. The units are liters. Include the units in your answers if these are absolute measures. [Reminder that work must be shown on all math problems. Number answers with no work shown will not get credit; therefore, work must be shown for both mean and median (sorted data set) in order to get any credit.]
MEAN: 8+14+16+10+18+10+22=98/7= 14
MEDIAN: 8 10 10 14 16 18 22= 14
MODES: 10
(Questions 13-14 can be completed after Lecture 3.)

Excel Homework 1
Spring 2024
Every Excel assignment has a corresponding tutorial in Canvas. The Homework 1 Tutorial will explain how to access Excel and download the homework data set before you begin.
You will notice in Canvas that there are two separate tutorials, one for PC and one for Mac versions of Excel. If you aren’t sure which tutorial applies to you, open one of them and begin following along. All Excel tutorials have a red box titled “Are you in the right tutorial?”. This red box is on page 2 of the HW1 Tutorial. Be sure to read this box– it will help you make sure that you are using the correct tutorial for your Excel version.
Use the appropriate Excel Homework 1 Tutorial on Canvas or any other sources to answer all of the following questions. Add the Data Analysis ToolPak to your computer based on the instructions in the Homework 1 Tutorial. You will not be able to proceed to other homework questions without adding Data Analysis ToolPak.
Using the Homework 1 Data Set in Module 1 in Canvas and following the example in the Excel Homework 1 Tutorial, create a Histogram and Frequency Table for the Wins
column. Please note that the Tutorial example uses the Payroll in Millions column. For your Histogram and Frequency Table, you will be using the Wins column, NOT the Payroll in Millions column.
You will want to set bins in increments of 5 (starting at 50 and going through 100) and label your Bins column with the title Bin Values. After creating the frequency table and histogram (make sure you complete the step of making the columns touch so there is no open space between the columns), answer Questions 1, 2, and 3 below. The frequency table and histogram do
not need to be turned in with your homework.
1.
Why do we need to take the extra step and make sure the columns are touching in the histogram? You will need to watch Lecture Video 2 about histograms to answer this question. (What kind of graph would we have if the columns don't touch?) (.1) Because we are continuing up the number line / If the columns did not touch, it would have been a Bar Chart.
2.
Since you made the columns touch, why are there still open spaces between some of the columns? Look
at the frequency table to help answer this question. (.1) Because in some numbers the value is zero so that’s why there is a gap and is not consecutive.
3.
Use the histogram to describe the shape of the distribution. (The histogram helps us turn data into information.) (.1) I would say it looks like a Bimodal
Using the Homework 1 Data Set in Canvas and following the instructions in the Excel Homework 1 Tutorial, create a pivot table to show the Sum of Payroll in Millions for the teams in the American League West Division
and then answer Question 4 below. (This pivot table should have only the Sum of Payroll in Millions for the American League West. The National League and the Central and East Divisions should not be in this pivot table.) The pivot table does not need to be turned in with your homework.
4.
What is the total Payroll in Millions for the American League West? (.1) 395.84
6.
Write a brief paragraph on what you learned about relative and absolute cell addresses in the tutorial and what distinguishes a relative and an absolute cell. (.1) In Excel, there exists two types of cells: Absolute Cells and Relative Cells. However, the main difference is seemed when changes want to be made to the specific cell or column. When a formula is copied to a different cell, relative references alter, but absolute references stay the same no matter where
they are copied. This is the key distinction between relative and absolute cell references.
6.
Name and describe a shortcut you can use in Excel. (.1) Ctrl+S: Used to save a workbook
(Questions 1-6 can be completed after Lecture 2.)
