The BACB lists some guidelines on posting on social media: When asking for advice on social media, any information may not be based in science Notes and Questions for Blurred Lines: Ethical Implications for Social Media for Professionals: Most people belong to some form of social media, such as facebook or instagram. 1 out of 7 people on earth have a facebook account. The National Association of Social Workers does not have anything about social media in their code of ethics, just codes relating to confidentiality and privacy. The American Medical Association published a report in 2011 related to the use of social media, and it emphasizes remaining confidential. The American Occupational Therapy Association does not have any guidelines that specifically refer to the use of social media, and neither does the American Speech-Language- Hearing Association. The American Counseling Association does have guidelines related to social media, in fact there is a full action that has been developed that refers to social media and technology. They recommend having 2 separate social media pages, one for personal use and one for professional use. They also discuss using informed consent with social media, and they describe the limits, benefits, and boundaries for the use of social media with clients. The Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) does address social media in the most recent code of ethics. 2.06 Maintaining confidentiality - this can be difficult to do on social media, as there is an abundance of personal information connected to your social media accounts. Just individuals knowing where you work can affect the confidentiality of whatever client you may be discussing. 8.0 Public statements - this refers to paid or unpaid advertising, brochures, printed matter, directory listings, personal resumes, social media, etc. When asking questions related to behavior therapy in facebook groups, it’s important to remember that any advice you may receive may not pertain to your client, or may not be based in science. Behavior analysts should do their own research, find their own solutions, or discuss with a trusted colleague. This also applies to behavior analysts sharing advice online,
When families send social media requests, it’s important to remind them of the code of ethics Social media can be a great tool when used appropriately, here are some guidelines: oftentimes behavior analysts do not consider their relationship with readers prior to responding to questions or providing suggestions. What to do if a parent of one of your clients requests to be your friend on social media? It’s important to remind them of the code of ethics and refer back to the policy to inform them that you are unable to accept their request. Guideline 1.06 of the BACB’s code of ethics refers to dual relationships, and how it may not be possible to avoid a non- professional relationship with families, especially when you’re from a small community. It’s important to put boundaries in place and set expectations upfront so as not to blur the lines between professional and personal relationships. Social media can be a great way to disseminate knowledge, reach out to future behavior analysts and build a community. Here are some guidelines when talking about behavior analytic services online: Make sure to heavily disguise real clients, and do everything in your power to remain confidential. Avoid making treatment recommendations. Refer readers back to the literature, inform them of the best resources they can use. Provide resources It’s important to remember that mistakes happen, especially when posting information online. What is publicly available has the potential to impact other people, whether intentionally or not. How can we use social media effectively? We can share publications, video demonstrations, bits and pieces of services, and use it as an opportunity to connect with people. . Summary This presentation was about social media, and how it plays a role in behavior analytic services. It’s important to keep the BACB’s code of ethics and guidelines in mind when posting on social media. There is a potential for multiple relationships when adding families, and giving and receiving advice can end up harmful. Some of the benefits of using social media is to share publications, video demonstrations, and as an opportunity to connect with people.
