2 Intro to Statistics Statistics in psychology and other life sciences help scholars and researchers do many things. It helps us to identify collect, and collate numerical facts and it also helps us to dig deeper and start to understand the relationships between individuals, things, and factors (Cowles, 2001). In short, statistics can help make the statements we share and assumptions we make more supported with evidence. My top three takeaways were as follows. First, there are many different ways to choose a sample, each with its own pros and cons such as as representativeness, time, and cost. Not only does this matter when you’re completing research, but also when you are attempting to get information from a resource. Second, while correlation helps us to illustrate and understand a relationship, the “Behind the Statistics” (2017) video reminds us that it does not explain causation. That is something I have heard over time in my years of academia but it will be even more important to remember as I move towards my own dissertation and research. The last thing I took away from the introductory materials is that individual differences must be considered when putting together a study. Each individual participant, whether they’re a student, a mental health professional, or a researcher, has unique differences about them that can have an impact on their responses and the results of a study. In regards to present and past feelings about statistics, if I’m being honest, I have been nervous about this course since day one of my Ph.D. program. Previous statistics courses and really any course in which math is involved I have really struggled with. I have worked hard to
3 develop a study design for my dissertation that is qualitative so that I can hone in on my strengths so delving deep into this world that has once caused me confusion and frustration makes me nervous. However, I enjoyed watching the explanatory introduction video so I’m hoping that moving forward in this course things will be explained and applied in a different way that helps me to understand more fully and to feel more competent in this area. I believe that if I am able to feel more confident about quantitative research methods, I will be able to more fully understand research in the world so that I can more fully support my clients and be a part of continuing to further the field of Marriage and Family Therapy.
