Quantitative Analysis in MFT Northcentral University Assignment 5: Generate Results Using SPSS Imagine that researchers are interested in the relationships among a few key variables within a random sample of 50 marriage and family therapists (MFTs). The researchers invited these MFTs to complete a questionnaire that included some demographic questions, a request to identify their preferred model of therapy, and two measures: the Change is Possible Scale (CPS), a measure of the belief that people can change and improve their lives, and the Liberal Social Values Scale (LSVS), an evaluation of the degree to which individuals endorse liberal social values. Scores on the CPS can range from 7 to 35, with higher scores reflecting a greater belief that people can change. Scores on the LSVS can range from 10 to 50, with higher scores indicating the endorsement of more liberal social values. Thus, the seven variables in this dataset are: (a) ID (Each participant’s identification number), (b) Gender (Gender of participant: 1. Female, 2. Male) (c) Age (Participant’s age) (d) Long.Th (How long participant has provide therapy) (e) Model (Participant’s preferred model of therapy: 1. Bowen Family Systems, 2. Narrative, 3. Solution- Focused, 4. Integrative) (f) CPS (Discussed above) (g) LSVS (Discussed above) These hypothetical data are contained in SPSS Dataset.Therapists.sav Please use these data to answer the following three questions: 1. Run frequencies and descriptive statistics (mean, median, & standard deviation) for six variables (except ID). Suppose you wanted to know if the mean scores you obtained on the CPS accurately reflected the means on this measure for the entire population of MFTs. Since you don’t have access to the population mean for the CPS, you will want to build a 95% confidence interval around your sample mean. One thing we do know is that the CPS was developed with a standardized mean and standard deviation (). Relevant to this problem, the CPS population standard deviation () is 4.12 . a. Follow the steps Caldwell explained in her text (see chapter 6; especially this section: Confidence Interval for the Mean with Known ) to calculate the standard error for the CPS. b. What other phrase can be used to describe the standard error? c. Now that you have the information you need, calculate and report (a) the 95% confidence interval for the CPS mean you obtained, and (b) the 99% confidence interval for the CPS mean you obtained. d. What did you learn thus far about these data in this assignment? 3. Next, imagine that a colleague asked if you thought the participants in your sample were similar to the general population. You decided to compare the mean scores you obtained on the LSVS with the population mean on this measure reported by the developer of this scale. Use chapter 7 in the Caldwell text (especially the section titled Single Sample Test with Known; including Table 7-1) to help you complete the following : a. State the null hypothesis for this analysis (the population mean for the LSVS is 33.8). b. Using the standard deviation of the population (LSVS=5.96) and the sample size (n=50), calculate the standard error of the mean for the LSVS.
c. Now you can calculate a Z score to determine the magnitude of the difference between the population mean and your sample mean on the LSVS. d. Using an alpha of .05, and the Z score you obtained, evaluate your null hypothesis and determine if it can or cannot be rejected. e. Describe what you learned from the results of the hypothesis testing for this measure.
