BA 350: Statistics 1 Activity 2 (Chapter 2) 8/28/2020 Instructions: Complete the following questions. You may discuss with those seated near you, but you must turn in your own assignment. Unless otherwise specified, responses should be brief (one or a few sentences). Completed assignments should be submitted to Activity 1 on Schoology. Vancouver Airbnb Imagine you are planning a trip to visit Vancouver and are looking for an Airbnb in which to stay. You will use data on Vancouver Airbnbs from July 2019 to explore your options. Before doing anything else: Open the July 2019 Vancouver Airbnb Listings.xlsx file, found in the “Data and Excel Resources” folder on Schoology. From the same folder, open the file, Excel Procedures.pdf. Use these to answer the following questions. 1. In the Excel spreadsheet find the variable, price (column BD), which represents the price for one night spent at the Airbnb location. a. Make a histogram of the price options. Follow the steps in the Excel Procedures PDF. Note: You can quickly highlight the desired data a few different ways. One way is to click in cell BD1, then hold both Ctrl (Command, for Mac-users) and Shift simultaneously and hit the down arrow. Alternatively, you can click on the column header, BD, which will highlight the entire column. b. Add an X-axis and Y-axis title to your histogram. You can do this by adding a chart element (refer to the Excel Procedure file for help). c. Add an appropriate title to your histogram. d. Add an overflow bin to your histogram. Refer to the Excel Procedures file on how to format your chart. Hint: You need to format the horizontal axis to add an overflow bin. Once you choose the appropriate section to format, you should find bin settings under the Axis Options.
e. Paste your histogram below. f. In a sentence or two, summarize your findings based on your histogram. Most Air BnB’s are in the $73-133 price range as seen by the highest bar in the histogram. Most Air BnB’s will be on the lower end of the spectrum as the bars immensely flatten out past the $493-553 price range. 2. Explore the relationship between bed_type and room_type of listings by creating a contingency table using a PivotTable in Excel. Follow the steps in the Excel Procedures document to create the PivotTable. Within the PivotTable Fields window, put bed_type in the Rows and room_type in the Columns. Then put either bed_type or room_type in the Values box (it doesn’t matter which).
a. Copy your contingency table below. Count of room_type Column Labels Row Labels Entire home/apt Private room Shared room (blank) Grand Total Airbed 1 1 Couch 1 2 3 Futon 2 9 11 Pull-out Sofa 14 11 25 Real Bed 4285 1614 36 5935 (blank) Grand Total 4302 1636 37 5975 b. How many listings have pull-out sofas? 25 c. Which room type is most common? Entire home/ apartment d. Which bed type is most common? Real bed

3. Revisit the contingency table you created for Problem 2. You can change your contingency table from displaying frequencies (i.e. counts) to displaying percentages. To do this, right-click on one of the cells in your table and choose the option “Show Values As” from the window that appears. Then, choose “% of Column Total” (you could alternatively make your table display as “% of Row Total” or “% of Grand Total”). a. Copy your contingency table below. N/A b. What percent of private rooms offer a real bed? 27.19% c. What percent of entire home/apartments offer a real bed? 72.19% 4. Again, revisit the contingency table from Problems 2 and 3. Now, display the cells as “% of Row Total.” a. Copy your contingency table below. N/A b. In what type of room are the majority of real beds found? Entire home/ apartment c. In what type of room would you be most likely to sleep on a futon? Private Room
5. Based on the contingency table you made in Problem 4, make a side-by-side bar chart (or column chart) of bed_type and room_type . To do this, click anywhere on your PivotTable then in the Insert tab, choose a 2-D bar or column chart. You can again refer to the Excel Procedures file for help. Note: you don’t need to highlight the whole table; Excel treats PivotTables as special, so you can simply click on any cell in the table and the chart you add should link to the PivotTable. a. Paste your side-by-side bar/column chart below. This is based on PivotTable in question 2 since I could not get the other ones to work b. In 1-2 sentences, describe the main message you found from your side-by-side bar chart in part a. A majority of AirBnB’s have a real bed. The blue bar is the real beds in a home/ apartment while the orange bar is the number of beds in a private room.
