Stat 1430 Graphs and Desc. Stats with StatCrunch To Prepare for this Recitation: 1. Log into MyStatLab 2. Click on the Stat 1430 course 3. Click on StatCrunch on the left side menu. 4. Click on “view the data sets from your textbook in StatCrunch” Car Discounts Go to Chapter 3 in the St atCrunch Data Sets and open the file “ Car Discounts .” This data set contains a random sample of customers at a new car dealership. The data include the amount of discount they were given off the sticker price on the car they purchased, their age, income, and their gender (1 = male, 0 = female). Answer the following questions about this data set 1. Was this an experiment or an observational study? Observational study 2. How many customers were sampled? 100 customer are sampled 3. Describe how you think they might have taken a random sample of customers who buy cars at a car dealership. The car dealer ship may take a random simple from their own database, they can put each user's information into the database after their transaction is completed. 4. Measures of Center: a. What was the median car discount? (see instructions below) 1327.5 b. What was the mean car discount? 1266.81 c. Compare the mean and the median.
Stat 1430 Graphs and Desc. Stats with StatCrunch The median car discount is larger than that of the mean. 60.69 TO FIND THE MEAN/MEDIAN/STANDARD DEVIATION, ETC OF A DATA SET IN STATCRUNCH: - Go to STAT MENU / SUMMARY STATISTICS / COLUMNS - When it asks to “Select Columns”: Select the variable you want to find the statistic for - Under “STATISTICS” Click on the statistics you want (for example MEAN, STANDARD DEVIATION….) - Click “COMPUTE!” 5. What is the standard deviation of the discounts? Would a couple of very big discounts added to your data set affect the standard deviation? If so how? 537.35782 From my perspective, several big discounts were added to the data will influence the data a lot, The standard division is the measure of the amount of variation or dispersion of a bunch of values. 6. What is the highest discount? What is the lowest discount? To find this, sort the data using the instructions below. The lowest discount is 131, and the highest discount is 2520. SORTING A DATA SET IN STATCRUNCH: - Go to DATA MENU / SORT - When it asks “Columns to Sort”, click “All Columns” -Sort Criteria: Choose the variable you want to sort by (Discount) - Click “COMPUTE!” 7. What are the units for mean, median, and standard deviation of discounts here? From the above question, the discount in the table refers to the amount of discount they were given off the sticker price on the car they purchased” , so the units for mean, median and standard division are all dollars.(the unit of standard divisions are same as that of mean and median)
Stat 1430 Graphs and Desc. Stats with StatCrunch 8. Make a histogram of the car discounts using Stat Crunch (see instructions below). Copy/paste here. Do not sketch! TO MAKE A HISTOGRAM OF A DATA SET IN STATCRUNCH: -Go to GRAPH MENU / HISTOGRAM - When it asks to “Select Columns”: Select the variable you want to find the statistic for - Under “Type” click whether you want to show the frequencies (counts) or the relative frequencies (percents) on the Y-axis. - Click “COMPUTE 9. Describe the shape of the histogram in terms of amount of discount. Most of the car discount are concentrated between 500-2000 10. Customer Age Variable: Answer the below questions. a. What do the ages look like of the customers? GO TO GRAPH MENU and select the appropriate graph and the age variable. Copy/paste your graph below and describe your results. Do not sketch!

Stat 1430 Graphs and Desc. Stats with StatCrunch b. The manager of the dealership wants to know what ages to market their cars to. Based on this data, and by interpreting the graph, what would you say? Managers should focus on selling cars to people in their 30-40 age, since this group of people are the largest part of the customer, up to 35%. On top of that, people aged between 20-30 and 40-50 also need to pay attention; they also make up a large percentage of customers, which respectively are 22% and 26%. 11. Take all the information you have so far and write a few sentences about the ages of the customers at the dealership and the amount of discounts the customers get overall. We should give relatively large discounts to the elderly and children, which can stimulate them to make more purchases. The number of middle-aged people buying cars is already relatively large, so you can choose relatively small discounts 12. GENDER. Find the means, medians, and standard deviations of the discounts for males and females separately. Put your answers on next page. Do this by the following: TO FIND SEPARATE MEANS, ETC. FOR GROUPS SEPARATELY IN STATCRUNCH: - - Go to STAT MENU / SUMMARY STATISTICS / COLUMNS - - When it asks to “Select Columns”: Select the variable you want to find the statistic for (Discount) - Under “Group by”, click the variable you want to group information for ( Sex) - - Under “STATISTICS” Click on the stat istics you want (for example MEAN, STANDARD DEVIATION….)
Stat 1430 Graphs and Desc. Stats with StatCrunch - - Click “COMPUTE!” Males (indicated by 1) Females (indicated by 0) MEAN 1624.5652. 962.05556 MEDIAN. 1614.5 870.5 ST. DEV. 382.35804. 457.74148 13. How many males and how many females were in the data set? There are 54 females and 46males 14. Using the same “group by” idea, make two histograms of the discounts, one for the males and one for the females. Copy/paste below. Do not sketch! Female Male
Stat 1430 Graphs and Desc. Stats with StatCrunch 15. Compare and contrast the shapes of the two histograms. The graph of the male are more symmetrical and concentrate on the center, On the other side, the data sets of women has more variability. 16. Using your findings (descriptive statistics and graph), does one gender get more of a discount than the other, based on this data? Explain using statistics as your evidence. Yes, because the mean and median discounts for men are much higher than for women, while at the same time, his sd is smaller than for women, which means that men generally enjoy larger and more stable discounts than women.
