Scientific Method: Controls and Variables
–
Part 1
Name: ________________________
SpongeBob and his Bikini Bottom pals have been busy doing a little research. Read the description for
each experiment and answer the questions.

Patty Power
Mr. Krabbs wants to make Bikini Bottoms a nicer place to live. He has created a new sauce that he
thinks will reduce the production of body gas associated with eating crabby patties from the Krusty
Krab. He recruits 100 customers with a history of gas problems. He has 50 of them (Group A) eat
crabby patties with the new sauce. The other 50 (Group B) eat crabby patties with sauce that looks
just like new sauce but is really just a mixture of mayonnaise and food colouring. Both groups were
told that they were getting the sauce that reduce gas production. Two hours after eating the crabby
patties, 30 customers in group A reported fewer gas problems and 8 customers in group B reported
having fewer gas problems.
Which people are in the control group?
What is the independent variable?
What is the dependent variable?
What should Mr. Krabs
’ conclusion be?
Why do you think 8 people in group B reported feeling better?

Marshmallow Muscles
Larry was told that a certain muscle cream was the newest best thing on the market and claims to
double a person
’
s muscle power when used as part of a muscle-building workout. Interested in this
product, he buys the special muscle cream and recruits Patrick and SpongeBob to help him with an
experiment. Larry develops a special marshmallow weight-lifting program for Patrick and
SpongeBob. He meets with them once every day for a period of 2 weeks and keeps track of their
results. Before each session, Patrick
’
s arms and back
are lathered in the muscle cream, while
SpongeBob
’
s arms and back are lathered with the
regular lotion.
Which person is in the control group?
What is the independent variable?
What is the dependent variable?
What should Larry
’
s conclusion be?
What questions still remain? Are there any confounding variables? How would you improve this
experiment?

Slimotosis
SpongeBob notices that his pal Gary is suffering from slimotosis, which occurs when the shell
develops a nasty slime and gives off a horrible odour. His friend Patrick tells him that rubbing
seaweed on the shell is the perfect cure, while Sandy says that drinking Dr. Kelp will be a better
cure. SpongeBob decides to test this cure by rubbing Gary with seaweed for 1 week and having him
drink Dr. Kelp. After a week of treatment, the slime is gone and Gary
’s shell smells better.
What was the initial observation?
What is the independent variable?
What is the dependent variable?
What should SpongeBob
’s conclusion be?
What questions still remain? Are there any confounding variables? How would you improve this
experiment?

Microwave Miracle
Patrick believes that fish that eat food exposed to microwaves will become smarter and will be able
to swim through a maze faster. He decides to perform an experiment by placing fish food in a
microwave for 20 seconds. He has the fish swim through a maze and records the time it takes for
each one to make it to the end. He feeds the special food to 10 fish and gives regular food to 10
others. After 1 week, he has the fish swim through the maze again and records the times for each.
What was Patrick
’
s hypothesis?
Which fish are in the control group?
What is the independent variable?
What is the dependent variable?
Look at the results in the charts. What
should Patrick
’
s conclusion be?
After doing the experiment and crunching the numbers, Patrick is still not sure about his
conclusion. What could he do to be more confident in his results?
What questions still remain? Are there any confounding variables? How would you improve this
experiment?

Clayton and Timothy took different sections of Introduction to Economics. Each section had a different final exam. Timothy scored 83 out of 100 and had a percentile rank in his class of 72. Clayton scored 85 out of 100 but his percentile rank in his class was 70. Who performed better with respect to the rest of the students in the class, Clayton or Timothy? Explain your answer.
A. Clayton, since his score is higher.
B. Clayton, since his percentile score is lower.
C. Timothy, since his score is lower.
D. Timothy, since his percentile score is higher.

Investigation Results – Using the given data, investigate the possible relationships between Life Expectancy as the response variable (y) and each of the three explanatory variables (x). For each x variable, you will complete the following steps.
Construct a scatter diagram displaying the relationship between x and y.You can use graph paper and draw the diagram by hand, use your calculator and take a picture of the screen, or use the online site: https://www.desmos.com/, which will allow you to print or save your diagram. Calculate and state the sample correlation coefficient r.Describe the type of correlation, if any, and interpret the correlation in the context o-f the data.Determine if the correlation is significant. Use α = 0.05 and show all steps of this process.
Inferences - Write at least one paragraph for each of the following questions. In the paragraph, you should explain as though you are talking to someone that is not in a statistics class. In…

Assignment #6
For this assignment, you will be using the Tips Dataset file in
Excel.
The file contains both qualitative and quantitative variables.
Choose two qualitative variables. You will be using a hypothesis
test to determine if the two variables are associated.
1. Which two variables did you choose? Create a table to
summarize the data from the data file. Example below:
Example: Listed below are data from a survey conducted
recently where Males and Females responded to their happiness
with their supervisor (this is fictitious data).
Response Male Female Total

2. Which hypothesis test is appropriate for this type of data?
Explain. What is your null hypothesis? What is your
alternative hypothesis?
3. Conduct the hypothesis test. Include any output from Excel.
What is your test statistic? Using alpha = 0.05 determine
the results of your hypothesis test. Explain.
4. Interpret your results into a conclusion based on…

Statistics Project Description
The goal of this culminating statistics project is to identify the factors that might have some influence on a chosen topic/variable. You will be collecting and analysing data for three different variables using a secondary source. There will be one dependent variable and two independent variables for which data will be needed.
For example, what are the factors that affect climate change? If climate change was your dependent variable, what could you pick for your independent variable? You will choose 2 factors that will create models that you can compare, to see if you can find a high correlation. Your final report and summary presentation will include the following sections.
Section 1
Dependent variable: Choose the main variable that you want to measure versus other variables. This will go on the vertical axis of your scatter plot. Provide rationale for why you chose this variable and brainstorm different variables that may impact it. Research the…

1. For these subjects only, construct a stemplot for the variable “heart rate”. (We will be making this into a back-to-back stemplot later, so leave room on the left side.)2. Discuss the shape of your stemplot. Is it symmetric? Positively skewed? Negatively skewed? None of these? Are there any outliers?3. How would you describe the center and the spread of this distribution?4. Find the five-number summary.5. Construct a box plot.

PLEASE ANSWER ALL PARTS OF THE QUESTION AND USE THE IMAGE FOR A GUIDE
A biologist is studying the effect of fertilizer on a species of endangered plant in a specific area of land divided into 32 equal sized plots. (See diagram.) Plots numbered 1—16 are in deep shade from the trees for most of the day while periodic flooding occurs in the areas numbered 17—32.
The biologist chooses 16 plots at random and applies organic fertilizer. The other plots receive non-organic fertilizer. At the end of the study period, the percentage increase in the number of this plant is measured in each plot and compared for each type of fertilizer.
Is this an experiment? Briefly explain your answer.
