Clinical Field Experience B: Collaboration with the Community Soleil Dixon-Widman November 9, 2022 SDP-521-0500 Unfortunately, at this time, my mentor was not available to work with me this week, so I had to work with Ms. James. She is my school counselor with whom I also work closely and is my go-to person for almost everything. She might not have the answers right then, but she will have something for me by the end of the day. The IEP team works together at Mcdaniel school to oversee the learner's support. There are cases where some learners have outside services where the school still oversees everything. The outside agency the school works with is Bethanna. Ms. James also works very closely with this organization in and outside of school. “Bethanna provides many behavioral health services to children and their families”. ( Bethanna's Behavioral Health Services ) Services are offered in schools in the South Philly area like ours. Most of the children served experienced trauma, abuse, and behavior issues such as anger and defiant behaviors. “Bethanna is a Christian non-profit agency committed to providing excellent services to our clients and families”. ( Bethanna's Mission ) However, "Bethanna is a multi-service child welfare and behavioral health agency that
provides the highest quality care system for children and families to ensure safety, restore emotional wellness and build family stability. Bethanna provides Community Umbrella Agency Services, Behavioral Health Services, Resource Home Care, SWAN Adoption Services, and Parenting Education". At the beginning of the school year, community resources are given out to the families on back-to-school nights. These different support organizations are at the school handing out their information and helping families get the support they need. If families cannot make it to back-to-school night, resources can be shared during conferences or IEP meetings. The team utilizes the school district's resources and any other resources given to the school from around the community. In our newsletters, anyone is allowed to contribute by adding anything they think will be helpful to our school and families, and it is not only from the staff at our school. Sometimes parents give us information from their jobs that benefit us, and we appreciate that. We also hand out flyers and hang them up in the office and the school lobby. This way, parents can explore them while in our school building. Support is necessary for maintaining good health both at school and at home. Not having a support system can lead to social isolation. This will harm a child's mental health. When people experience social isolation, they can be at risk for many things. Alcohol, drug misuse, depression, stress, and suicide can play a part in being socially isolated. There are not limited resources, but there is a wait list for just about everything now. Everyone needs some service now, and I think after coming out
of the pandemic, there has become a high need for therapy services. Bethanna has a mobile therapy service at our school and the family's home. Ms. James works very closely with Bethanna and the team to ensure the children at our school are given the best services everyone can offer. Instead of just handing you information about resources offered by different companies, she can also give you an entire run down and ensure you fully understand everything being said. I am so grateful to have her as a personal resource. References: What services does Bethanna provide? (n.d.).
