1 Health Care in the United States Samantha Pyara Master of Social Work, Walden University SOCW 6361-03 Social Policy Dr. Deborah Word December 10, 2023
2 Health Care in the United States Describe a current social problem and the vulnerable population it impacts . A major social problem within the United States is health care. The vulnerable populations that are impacted by the health care system are children, the elderly, the socioeconomically disadvantaged, underinsured individuals, and/or those with certain medical conditions. These populations are crucial to our economy because they include all ages, races/ ethnicities, and socioeconomic statuses which make up the whole population of the United States. How/when has this problem been identified historically, and what were the actions taken to address this concern? According to the article, ‘The American Health Care System Has Lots of Problems. Here’s When They Started.’ States’ problems with the health care system started in 1938. Before this time, people used healers and did not have a health care system. Starting in the 20 th century, germ theory and vaccines became widely accepted in the U.S. and people started using hospitals more. When people started using hospitals more, the demand for proper regulations and licensed doctors arose. How have the populations affected by the social problem changed over time? Healthcare economics, insurance, and payment predict the population and their healthcare program. A large amount of the healthcare population is the elderly. According to an analysis by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, because there are many people in the U.S. are 65 years and older this can expect to bring more challenges to health care, which can include more chronic and degenerative diseases and higher costs (Evans, 2003). This is expected to expand
3 from the population aged 65 and older from 12.4% in 2000 to 19.6% in 2030. Also, people aged 80 years and older is expected to double. How might this social problem be incongruent with social work values/ethics? The healthcare crisis is incongruent with social work and how healthcare is delivered. Social workers provide evidence-based foundations for integrated health care to help with effective practices for health care (Harman, 2018). Social workers in a general sense have their ethical values to perform but in health care, those can look different in other places. Understanding and making connections through shared values with clients is effective for all programs and organizations delivering health care because it is a sensitive subject for everyone. Describe the next steps for how you will identify a policy. My first step is to see what the major issues of health care are and who falls under those categories. I will choose a few issues that are being talked about in the media today. I will identify what policies people are going against and what people are trying to achieve. Asses other policies that are working for a majority is also a good start because it will lay out which way health care should lean towards. I can also identify who represents health care in the political world and share their insights on how they plan to implement the people’s issues.
