Report
Cheyenne French SPD-200 December 18th,2023 Scott Reisbord IDEA and IEP Process Before the IDEA was set in place kids were not allowed free education. These students would be placed in random institutions or parents would have to pay for private schooling and that was the only options they had. IDEA was set in stone to help with goals set for students each year and any extra support needed to support those students. The IDEA requires the state to provide free appropriet public education to students that are eligible for special education ( Shea, 2022). Once kids are approved for special education services an IEP is set in place. Some students could have an IEP for multiple subjects or just one. The IEP is the support the student receives ( Shea,2022). With the proper guidelines of the IDEA the IEP can be set and stone. The IDEA governs how state and public agencies provide early intervention, special eduation, and related services to 7.5 million students ( IDEA.ed,gov). This helps the school do evaluations on students who may have one or more disabilities. The IDEA also established the IEP to guarantee that every student has access to a FAPE. This means they have to include students current education level, short adn long term goals, and the services that are to be provided. The IDEA is big on placing students in a regular class setting as much as possible this is called Least Restricive Enviorment ( LRE) ( IDEA.ed.gov). The IDEA will helps students along the way and for the future and also support the parents and be there to help guide their kid in the right direction.
There are memembers required by law to be involved in the IEP process. The members include the following; Parents, they are the one the have the most knowledge about the child. The next is, one educational teacher they know the student is doing in the classroom and the general education curricuilm involved. There will also be one special education teacher involved. There needs to be an expert there to read and interpret the evaluation results. The child must be present if they are 16 or older ( ASHA.org). All people involved in the process understand the roles of the students and the roles of their colleagues. Everyone makes sure the rights of the child is protected at all time. The best way to come up goals with your team is identify education impact, Record the students present levels, collaborate on goal development, determine how each team will support the students goals, come up with a system to collect the data, and make a plan for following up with team members ( ASHA.org). The IEP process is a written document for students with disabilities with ages 3-25 years old that outline the students educational needs and goals and any programs and services the ISD member district will provide to help the student to make educational progress ( Department of Education,2023). The first step is pre-referral, interventions are to set up a IEP. The next step is referral for special education services. This can come from the parents, daycare professionals, public health services, doctors or social services ( Department of Education, 2023). The third step is identification. The step after that is egelibility and then the IEP would follow. The last step is evaluation and reviews. The IEP requires follow ups. The goal with an IEP is to make sure the students goals are being met. A IEP should include childs skills and peromence rate and progress where there are area of concern. The IEP must have goals. The reason to have an IEP is to help the student grow and be come stronger in the area of concerns. Having goals helps keep the chld and the members on
track with the students growth. The IEP should also include how these goals will be met. It will include the information shared with the parents to help them know how their child is progressing. A description of the program should be included in the childs IEP. There will be a start and end date, and where the services will be located. When the child turns 16 they will go over what to do for a postsecondary option. As the child will be starting that at that age. After watching the “ FIEP: A Facilieted IEP meeting” I have learned that listening to the parents concerns and addressing them all matters. Having an agenda visible helps keeps everyone on track and helps know what is expected throughout the whole meeting. I think its important everyone talks up on behalf of the child to make sure everyone is on the same page and understanding of the students goals. The IDEA was invented to make sure every child had a free public education. This is done through IEP. In order for everyone to have a successful IDEA the IEP needs to be follow to meet the students needs. This has helped with all students and parents to make sure their kids are all on the right track.
