1 VARIABLES, MEASUREMENT, AND SPSS Valeria M. Díaz García Walden University RSCH-62101 Quant Reasoning & Analysis December 3, 2023
2 Description of Variables Frankfort-Nachmias & Leon-Guerrero (2018) indicated that a variable is a property of people or objects that takes on two or more values (p,5). The HSLS database consists of sixty- eight variables. A variable is a property of people or objects that takes on two or more values (Frankfort-Nachmias & Leon-Guerrero, 2018). For example, people can be classified into a number of socio-economic status categories, such as education or income. The two variables selected were Hours spent watching television or movies on typical school day and Hours spent playing video games on typical school day. Statistics T1 Socio-economic status composite Hours spent watching television or movies on typical school day Hours spent playing video games on typical school day N Valid 5422 5247 5125 Missing 503 678 800 Mean .0558 2.39 1.81 Description of the unit of analysis The selection of the research object, be it social artifacts, groups, individuals, or organizations, as mentioned by Frankfort-Nachmias & Leon-Guerrero (2020) is the responsibility of the unit of analysis. As an illustration of the unit of analysis for the variables I have chosen, consider conducting individual interviews with adolescents who decide whether to watch television or play video games after school. Because I am intrigued by the number of hours that they devoted to engaging in said activity subsequent to a standard academic day. Description of each variable
3 Franklin-Nachmias & Leon-Guerrero (2020) described the n ominal levels of measurement assign numerical values to categories for categorization, such as marital status or gender. Ordinal levels assign numerical values to rank-ordered categories, such as 1 to 5, with 1 representing strong agreement and 5 representing disagreement. The interval-ratio level of measurement involves all measurements conveyed in the same units and evenly dispersed, with the rank of interval-ratio values possible. What might be the implications for social change? Based on my comprehension of the first chapter of Franklin-Nachmias & Leon-Guerrero (2020) adopting diversity in research can lead to enhanced understanding and a more comprehensive understanding of social phenomena. By incorporating individuals from various contexts, participants, and researchers, researchers can gain a more holistic understanding of social phenomena. This inclusive approach encourages scholars to pose inquiries that encompass a wider spectrum of viewpoints and experiences, addressing issues and concerns pertaining to diverse populations. Adopting diversity in the research process impacts how scientists interpret and perceive their results, allowing for more comprehensive and precise explanations of social phenomena. By recognizing and integrating these facets of diversity, scholarly investigations can more comprehensively encompass the intricacy and abundance of society. Statistical procedures and quantitative methodologies can be employed to describe and analyze the multifaceted elements of society, generating empirical evidence that supports social change efforts, guides policymaking, and advances the cause of a more inclusive and equitable society.
