Hernandez 1 Sabrina Hernandez Professor Notarangelo Freshman Composition 101 3 August 2020 Module 6: Research Paper Criminal Justice Teachers In law and justice, implementing the laws, and making sure individuals are following the laws, are just as important as someone teaching the laws and allowing the future law officers and judicial people to learn what they mean. In many prospects, teachers of all kinds are underappreciated and underpaid. This can’t be the point for those who teach our future law enforcement. The criminal justice and law enforcement teachers are a huge foundation for our law system. If we don't have great criminal justice teachers, that leaves us with a more than flawed system as we do now. If officers of the law had better teachers, we wouldn't be dealing with police brutality issues. I am working towards a degree in Justice Studies with a concentration in criminology. I want to teach the next generation of law officers and judicial personnel. As all teachers help to educate the next generation, that's what I hope to do as well. According to the source, “ Teach courses in criminal justice, corrections, and law enforcement administration. Includes both teachers primarily engaged in teaching and those who do a combination of teaching and research.” ( Criminal Justice & Law Enforcement Teachers, Postsecondary ) In order to obtain this career, there is a lot of schooling involved. Not only do you need a degree in Justice studies but must have some courses in education. You would need either a masters or doctorate in this degree. Having knowledge of children is not a major requirement but it is recommended and
Hernandez 2 appreciated since you will be teaching starting at the college level and continuing on into adults. According to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Criminal Justice Teachers teach courses in criminal justice, corrections, and law enforcement administration. This includes both teachers primarily engaged in teaching and those who do a combination of teaching and research.” As any normal teacher, day to day responsibilities for criminal justice teachers are very similar. However, the difference is that our teaching abilities are solely about the justice system. Another source states, “Prepare and deliver lectures to undergraduate or graduate students on topics such as criminal law, defensive policing, and investigation techniques, initiate, facilitate, and moderate classroom discussions, and evaluate and grade students' class work, assignments, and papers.”( Criminal Justice & Law Enforcement Teachers, Postsecondary ) These are just some of the few things that criminal justice teachers do. This job is one that can be done relatively anywhere. As all teachers it just means working somewhere in need of teachers for this specific subject. Most criminal justice teachers work on college campuses. They also work at police academies and law schools. This is because they are teaching the future of law enforcement and there is no better place than training camps and facilities of law enforcement. It would be relatively easy to land a job in this specific career. This is due to a high demand of criminal justice teachers as our demand of law officers also increases. I intend to live in the bay area. The bay area, specifically Silicon Valley has a high rate of police officers and police funding. This means they will want and need more teachers for the justice system to train these new cycles of officers of the law. They project a number on average the same as normal teachers, regarding the need and importance of them in this specific area which means, I am highly likely to find a job in this field and in this area that I would like to live and work in.
Hernandez 3 I hope to gain, first, my bachelor’s in justice studies with a concentration in criminology. I then hope to gain my masters within the same subject and minor in education so I can not only give lectures but be seen as a full-blown teacher. Afterwards, to continue my plan of teaching criminal justice in the bay area, I hope to work at police stations and detective agencies to gain more experience and to allow myself to get an inside look into the day to day structure of our law enforcement. In order for me to succeed in reforming them, I must first understand their days. In, “Teachers of Criminal Law,” it explains how much work it takes in order to be able to teach the law. I don't see it as work but as an investment into the future of our society. As a social activist, it is my job to take down the system from the inside. The best way to take down the system is by fixing it. In the journal, “How the Criminal Justice System Educates Citizens,” it explains how important it is for our justice system to educate our citizens. It also shows how sometimes, the justice system wrongly educates its citizens since it shows loopholes in the law and how it shows it being wrongly executed. We see this in loopholes in our amendments and our constitution. We can see it when some races or certain cases do not get speedy trials that are in violation of our rights to a speedy trial. Freedom of speech is constantly violated. I want to fix this. I want to show the world of justice why it is so important to truly follow these laws. Considering this is a worldwide needed job, it will be fairly easy to find a job in this field. Every year there are over 1,500 job openings in the state of California alone. There are three different institutions who are more than likely to hire in my expected profession. These institutions include, junior colleges, state colleges and universities, and state government run academies for law enforcement. The mean annual wage for this job according to the “U.S Bureau

Hernandez 4 of Labor Statistics,” is $72,390 a year. This is a great wage as an average, and the lowest in starting is about $48,000 a year. I also hope in the far future after being established in my career, to go to Law school. In my own personal roadmap, my dream and goals are to first educate and liberate the ideals of those who don’t fall under basic human rights and allow the world to understand the law and truly follow it. Once I am able to feel that i have completed this dream or fulfilled it, I want to go to law school and fight for those who have been wronged by our corrupted justice system and educate the justice system from within again, but this time as a lawyer. “In the face of a burgeoning crime rate and polarized public attitudes, judges are being urged to reexamine sentencing concepts, including disposition alternatives and treatment modalities. The writer suggests that the judge's role, while important, is limited; that the process is necessarily complex; that, while significant progress in certain areas has been made, there are no proposed solutions available which will, if adopted, singularly arrest a growing social problem of major concern.”(Criminal Justice.” Social Science , vol. 50) This quote is explaining how much the law is out of our hands, as citizens, lawyers, and judges, and put more into our government when it should not be. It should be our job as a people to reform this justice system and give more power to us as a democracy and not solely the government. This is a big thing I hope to fix. I’ve watched crime shows my whole life growing up, from Criminal Minds, to Law and Order: SVU. In each of these, yes there are the important officers and detectives, but there is also, the even more important lawyers and ADA’s. Without them many cases could be thrown out or not taken. I hope to do lots of charity cases for immigrants, women, and people of color who are unable to pay for these services and help them fight against the system that wronged them. Throughout my recent years, many people tell me goals are unreachable and childlike for
Hernandez 5 me to want to change the world and law so drastically. But each time I allow them to realize that fighting for equality and ridding the role of racism and misogyny isn’t something that should be seen as childlike or too far of a dream to obtain but should be something we already have now. When it comes to my future goals, implementing the laws, and making sure individuals are following the laws, are just as important as someone teaching the laws and allowing the future law officers and judicial people to learn what they mean. This is why I want to be a criminal justice teacher and later on in life, a lawyer. With these career choices, I implement myself into the broken system and although I am one person, I can help be a part of a chain reaction in change. As I previously stated, change doesn’t happen by hopping for it, but it happens by working towards it and persuading those around you to join you in a fight, that although many think it does not, it affects all of us. Teaching is how I hope to make a wave of change. Works Cited
