Running head: WEEK THREE ASSIGNMENT 1 Cultural Competency in a Workplace Khadijah Thompson HHS201-Introduction to Human Services Matthew Hubbs December 14, 2023
WEEK THREE ASSIGNMENT 2 Cultural Competency in a Workplace Working as a human service worker you have to have compassion, empathy and have cultural competency. Cultural competency means being aware of your own cultural beliefs and values but also understanding that others beliefs and values may be different than yours. (Munoz,2009) This means being able to honor other’s perspectives and being respectful to others opinions as well. What It Means to be a Culturally Competent Professional What it means to be culturally competent is the capacity to value diversity, conduct self- assessments, understand differences acquire cultural knowledge and adapt to diversity. Human service workers must maintain a certain standard when working with clients. They have to be well aware that everyone think differently and does things different. Culture play a huge part in most people decision making. Respecting one’s decision, choices and understanding that everyone will ultimately make different choices based off culture is what makes you culturally competent. Characteristics that are necessary to be culturally competent are self awareness, cultural humanity, and commitment to understanding and embracing different culture. ( Munoz 2009) Significance of “Multicultural Human Services” Multicultural human services just dives deeper into cultural competence. Multicultural human service is the knowledge and understanding of other cultures. Not only understanding differences but recognizing that culture, sex, religion, gender, ethnicity and opinions. Multiculturalism in human services is intended to remediate political, economic and social disadvantages that marginalized groups experience as a direct result of non-mainstream beliefs or ethnic affiliations. (Social Work Degree Guide)
WEEK THREE ASSIGNMENT 3 Challenges that Exist in a Multicultural Context There can be many challenges that can exist in a multicultural context. Language barriers, conventions, values, beliefs, actions and attitudes that differ impact how people view themselves and interact with others. (Fresh Essay) These issues may also affect how people ask for help, use services and express their feelings. For example: There may be differences in how someone from the United States ask for help, than someone who’s from china. Multicultural human service workers make it easy and comfortable for people to freely express themselves without being judged. Two to Three Strategies that a Human Services Professional Use Some of the strategies some human service professionals could use is making sure your respectful and not bias when people have opinions or express themselves. Another thing you could do is ensure that your understanding to how individuals feel and open to learning why they feel that way. Some strengths that I have is that I am empathetic and respectful of others opinions. One area I could work on is how I ask certain questions. Since I am outspoken and kind of blunt, the way I ask certain things may come off as offensive or judge mental. Even though, I know I don’t mean any harm- others may think otherwise. Conclusion In conclusion, human resource workers must have a certain level of empathy and respect for one’s decisions and values. Cultural competence in workplace is vital to providing clients with good quality care and helping them with their needs.
